Just finished watching, *finally,* never mind the fact that I fell asleep the first time I tried to watch, and that I was wrestling TWO fussy babies this morning, which pretty much dampened the mood... but anyway, I DID watch. In the afterglow of the first season, and the aftermath of all that transpired AFTER, I'm pretty sure this show lost it's lustre for me... It's REALLY hard for me to get past that bad taste I still have in my mouth. I know I've said that a lot, but it's still true for me. I love this first episode of S3, I'm just not sure this show has the same feeling for me anymore. I'm sad to say that. The opening scene was pretty magical, but I'm not sure I can watch it without a twinge of something jaded, creeping in. Maybe, despite the wonderful actors, the characters feel forced after all the S2 contrivances. I don't know. We'll see. It's a good strong first episode, it just doesn't feel the same for me. Anyway, I would say more, likes, dislikes, etc, but I don't have time right now. I'll watch some of the key scenes again, especially the romantic ones, to see if I can get past my roadblocks. It's hard to change the trajectory, though, when something has gone so far off the tracks. I'm trying to love it again, but at best, I'm kind of liking it. I should not have watched most of S2, that would absolutely, 100% fix me. Some things you can't unsee, though. Modifying my post to say that I LOVED the proposal, although, I can't see why it wasn't on the rooftop to begin with... LOL. Totally squee worthy. Spydancer, first of all, I have not come on this board in ages. I decided to come on to read about the episode because I had decided not to watch it. I wasn't even going to post any comments until I read your feedback.
You always post EXACLTY my thoughts and I wanted you to know that you're not alone in feeling the way you do. My hubby watched the episode and found that it was a great start, while I was nearby, so I was able to hear what was being said (I looked up several times as well, to see what was going on).
Like you, I don't feel the same way about the show and the characters because of that dreadful S2 . I know for certain that I would never feel the same way about BatB again....they could try to go back to that warm and fuzzy feeling of S1, VinCat can get married and have beast babies, live in a house with a white picket fence....but it doesn't remove what took place in S2 in my mind. It's so bad that I can't even watch S1 anymore. I thought I would have been able to but I'm yet to re-watch it.
It's funny you mentioned 'feeling forced' because, the few scenes I saw (the romantic scenes), they did feel forced to me....not natural or raw...as though they're trying hard to recapture (for fans) S1 feel. That's my feeling anyway. As for the proposal - absolutely, the rooftop was the perfect spot, but I would have liked Vincent to say things like, "Catherine, you are the love of my life, I've never felt this way about anyone before"....... etc. In S1, we had expected Vincent to apologize to Catherine for the way he treated her when Alex was around. We expected him to apologize in S2 and all he said was, "I don't ever want to hurt you again"...with Catherine responding, "I know". It wasn't enough for me, more needed to be said, after EVERYTHING we had to go through in S2.
I still, to this day, can't understand how any producer/showrunner/writer could watch S1 and WANT to destroy the characters and the heart and soul of the BatB! And why their intention was to draw in a wider audience WITHOUT even advertising the show! Anyway, I may not comment again so all the best!

i have to chime in S2. From the start of ep. 1, I felt the "change" as well as watching potential stories go down the drain. The majority of the episodes weren't that great and as cohesive as I would have liked them to have been. But out of 22, at least 8 episodes i liked overall. Having a different set of writers was partly the reason, but should not have been an issue. Tbh, I've only watched S2 once. I can't even regard it as a full season cause it didn't feel like one. I just went back to watch one of my fave episodes, "Bridesmaid Up"; I still fangirl about it. lol S1 will hold a special place in my heart forever. Now with 3.1 i will give tptb credit getting BatB "back on track" imo. I'm not feeling the special agents at all. They instantly seem disposable, lasting 2 more episodes. lol i don't know what to make of their position on the show as of yet; to be continued. lol I could overlook some of the tiny hiccups just as long as we never result in S2 tom foolery. lol Again, to be continued. The dialogue needs a little patch work done to it. Yes continued repetitive and redundant dialogue... It sounds like that because there is not enough character identification. You want to be able to differentiate each character from one another; even when they are having the same conversation. Most of the time it seems like everyone is on the same reading level. Lets turn it up a notch. Tickle my fancy. Provoke my thought, why dontcha. lol More depth is required for sure. Onto the proposal, I watched it several times. I think that coming from Vincent, I could understand and identify why he said it the way he did and as some have said if he went the "textbook" route, it wouldn't have much resonance. The more I watch it the more appropriate that scene was; wouldn't change a thing. All in all, a solid start and lets see where S3 takes us.

Sunshine978,
PLEASE don't stop commenting OR watching. I have been SO VERY EXCITED to see all the old commentators coming back again to weigh in. Like you and Spydancer and many, many others, I have my problems with Season 2. However, that is one of the reasons I love to read the comments that say what I feel, because they ALSO remind me of what I DID get out of Season 2 overall as well. I can even find ways to defend Season 2. I also feel that if I would not have been spoiled ahead of time for so much of Season 2, I might have seen it differently at the time. Maybe not. The TVGuide multi-episode binge watching that they did before the last bit of the Season 2 aired made me think that it wasn't quite as bad as I remember. Still LOVE the tweeted chalk-board that just listed so much of that controversial Season 2 material as the "blur" of mess that happened in between!
What it comes down to for me is that, even at its worst, I LOVE BATB and VinCat especially. The Grimm fairy tales had horrific dramas too before characters found a happily ever after, IF they ever got one at all (hey, anyone remember that the poor little mermaid actually DIED for her love, without ever getting the chance to be with the love of her life? So we could have actually had it WORSE!).
Did I want Vincent and Catherine to both acknowledge to one another about all the wrongs of Season 2? Yes, if for no other reason then to make me feel better. But realistically, would either one want to remember and go through all that pain and wrongdoing? No. Vincent is also not always so great with words (even in Season 1, he TOTALLY flubbed his attempts to make Cat understand why he gave Alex the time of day and just WHY he actually knew Cat was the one he wanted.) but I felt he summed it all up with "I don't want to ever hurt you again." It meant he understood his roll in what happened between them and was sorry for the pain caused to the BOTH of them. And Catherine had already admitted herself that they both made mistakes. Did we REALLY want to hear them rehashed out all over again? My heart broke from it the first time!
its I why I love 216 so much. Catherine's speech at the ball towards the end of the episode basically had her acknowledging the ups and downs that both of them had been through and how it changed them both. But at the end of the day, she loved the stronger version of Vincent that emerged through a result of the mistakes. And by the time they have finished talking, they have basically resolved the underlying issues between them (FOR THAT TIME--I anticipate Season 3 is about really recognizing that just because you ARE now happy with what you have become DOESN'T mean that those insecurities raised by previous events DIDN'T just go away because you want them to!). They both love one another and want to be with one another, despite knowing the mistakes that were made previously. And because of those mistakes, they are willing TO FIGHT HARDER to be together once more, as episodes 217-222 prove.
You have immensely stubborn and independent characters in Vincent and Catherine. And I LOVE that about them. Means they will CONSTANTLY be at odds about how to move forward, even with something as simple as room decour in their apartment. (I mean, seriously, Christian and Ana FOUGHT as much as they had sex after being married in the books, no matter how great the love was. Because they WERE such stubborn people AND that was what they loved about one another. HOW many times did Christian gripe about Ana defying him YET THEN SAY that was what attracted him first--her ability to tell him NO, which he found hot. He always was saying, "I love AND I hate fighting with you." That IS SO VINCAT and what I enjoy on my screen!) I will ALWAYS remember one of my FAVORITE HOT MOMENTS of Season 1 VinCat: Vincent with his hands clenched into fists angrily/broodingly staring at Catherine through the fence while the rain pours down outside the warehouse. And Catherine, leaning against her vehicle with her head back and her hair blowing in the wind just WAITING for him, knowing that he told her NOT to come back. And her sayind, "I didn't want to get attacked by JT with a bat again." And she KNEW Vincent would be unable to refuse to come out for her AND let her in. All his beastly powers would NOT allow him to keep out of his warehouse the one person who he most WANTED to let in!
What I loved MOST about "Beast of Wall Street" was how the WHOLE UNDERLYING THEME through the whole episode, to me, was VinCat's independent fears that they might repeat said mistakes of Season 2 AND trying to figure out a road forward, together, with the realities of their situations that they had dealt with previously THAT WERE going to be present moving forward (such as what do we do about the knowledge that others out there continue to experiment AND continue to be interested in beasts. That certainly wasn't going anywhere, despite Gabe's death. AND REMEMBER--that means Gabe never got the chance to work with Sam to actually bring independent members of "the organization" down. So they are still out there. AND most likely aware of VinCat. And maybe even DHS's interest.). So you see VinCat actually HAVING to have the conversations that they sought to avoid and put behind them. And I am looking forward to seeing this play out on my screen.

My Review of JUST the PROPOSAL:
Vincent was originally going to try for the stereotypical dream proposal. The perfect flowers, the perfect location, in front of an audience, etc. And honestly, that would NEVER be Cat, quite frankly. Catherine is an in-the-moment kind of girl. Her most OUTSTANDING moments have been when she simply looked in Vincent's eyes and spoke straight from the heart. Those moments? Think right before the first ever rooftop kiss where CAT SPECIFICALLY TELLS VINCENT that she doesn't need ANY of the fanfare, JUST HIM. And when she goes to him in AMP and tells him that she trusts him and their love completely. That whatever girl he might have beasted out in front of, she WASN'T her. She had FAITH AND TRUST in him and that he would not hurt her AND that he loved her. And Cat's words ALWAYS just spilled out of her, unplanned. And Vincent just loves her all the more because of her faith that he will do the right thing in the end.
So when Vincent comes to Catherine, after an argument that could have potentially spelled the end of them, and asks her to marry him, it was just perfect as is. He has acknowledged the fact that they can never truly have normal, but whatever life he DOES have, he wants it to be with her. Even understanding her commitment to using their gifts for the greater good rather than just coasting in the bubble.
And I LOVED THIS. So much so BECAUSE it was the REVERSE of my favorite Season 1 moments. Those ABOVE Season 1 moments that I just commented on came AFTER VinCat faced WHY they shouldn't be together--the pressure from Cat's family, Vincent inadvertently killing someone in an attempt to save Heather, Vincent's previous beastly lack-of-control issues that led him to almost attack a woman he was trying to start something with. Vincent had just earlier in the episode asked Cat if their pretend break-up shouldn't be for real due to all these very real concerns. Yet Cat wants to be with him KNOWING all the unknowns. She seeks Vincent out and tells him this in BOTH the episodes I previously mentioned.
So this time, Vincent SEEKS HER out, the reverse of the Season 1 situations, and lets Cat know that he wants life with her, even with the misfortune and sorrow that will undoubtedly follow due to the beast part of the situation and those that either create or capture beasts. As Reynolds previously told Catherine, someone will ALWAYS want the beast: either to use Vincent or destroy him in order to meet their goals. Yet despite all this, the two acknowledge wanting to build a NORMAL for them around that.
And I LOVED how Cat was just as unsure of what Vincent had to say to her as Vincent was in Season 1 when she came to him. But they both see their LOVE as being enough to pursue the unknown. So I DIDN'T want Vincent to do the "perfectly" scripted proposal, but for him to get STRAIGHT to the point--look her in the eye and ask her to spend her life with him. That was what it came down to. Not her full name, not the location, not even necessarily the surroundings. YET I WAS SO GLAD IT WAS THEIR ROOF. Put still yet another lousy Season 2 moment to bed finally for me.
And I LOVED LOVED LOVED how Vincent then needed Cat to repeat her "yes," just to be sure! And he is then so happy in the moment in swinging her around with him while she laughs and cries at the same time. And then the passion takes over. I could NOT have asked for anything more. (Well, at least not that would have been shown on network tv!)

And for all of you wanting THOSE PERFECT words to somehow represent VinCat's struggle from there to now, PLEASE go listen to Christina Perri's "THE WORDS." It is SO perfect. That is the only other song I would have preferred playing during the proposal. In the song, she mentions all the "hell" they had to go through to get them to where they are. Again, so VinCat.

My actual Review of the Episode:
The beginning scene is a VinCat trying to get to one another. And the ending scene is their coming together, determined to always make it about finding their way back to one another.
Thus, it begins AND ends with VinCat. And THAT is how it should be. In that first scene, you see their absolute PASSION for one another. And the underlying theme ALSO of just how hard it will be for them to be together: their professions will dominate so much of their lives AS WELL AS their commitments to saving lives. They will ALWAYS HAVE to FIGHT to be together, both with the world and with each other, considering the competing factors dominating for their attention.
And BOTH of them want to have it all NOW, no more waiting. Cat eyes that wedding dress. She wants it and everything it symbolizes. Yet she is inwardly afraid to admit that. And after her fight with Vincent, she wonders if that is what Vincent wants as well. Because Cat realizes that she wants her life to count for something other than just her home life. She feels the WEIGHT of destiny, of having a life WORTH something outside of oneself. She wants a purpose and feels the need to use what she knows to help others. She has SEEN Tyler, and been reminded of a once bitter Vincent, forced into hiding due to someone experimenting on him. She CAN'T ignore that, even if she has earned the right to.
So Cat WORRIES that Vincent won't want to be with her if she is not willing to just be Normal and ignore her calling. And you see Cat really WRESTLE with this. Unlike in "Ever After," she is LOVING those everyday moments with Vincent JUST as much as he is. They are both SO HAPPY in their own little bliss alone together in the apartment. After all the hardship Vincent has undergone to become a doctor again, ALL he can think about on his first day back, quite frankly, is getting THROUGH with his work day in order to go propose to Cat. He has ALL he thinks he can possible want.
And Vincent's apparent anger with Cat is about so much MORE. It is Vincent secretly wondering if what REALLY attracts Cat is his beast and the action/adventure that comes with it. What if Cat COULDN'T be happy with just him and her?
And Vincent TRULY REGRETS what happened in Season 2. You see this ALSO in his anger--he is SO AFRAID of what could happen if he lost himself again. It has almost become a PHOBIA for Vincent, due to all he previously lost. Vincent fought hard to regain his humanity, and he is UNSURE HIMSELF of just how tentative a hold over his humanity that he may actually have.
But what Vincent actually LEARNS in this episode is that IT WILL NEVER JUST BE HIM AGAIN. He has the friends and family necessary to make him fight to come back. He has those willing to ALWAYS seek him out and give him the necessary pep talk. He has firm ROOTS now that he did NOT knowingly have in Season 2. And Catherine will ALWAYS HELP him fight to bring him back from the dark side. And he has to learn to TRUST that this will be enough. Because being with Catherine ALSO entails having a DESTINY.
And Vincent also learns that he CANNOT walk away from the missions either. Once he actually SEES TYLER attack someone FOR HIMSELF, he HAS to get involved. And he recognizes that Catherine is right.
Together, they will define their "normal." And LOVE, at least the truly epic and destined kind, is about MORE than just the words or just being with someone else. It is also about DEFINING YOURSELF in the context of the "us" in order to be and do what you are meant to do together.
Overall message: they CHOOSE to be together for LOVE, BUT they are DESTINED to be together for MORE. Like their ancestors before them. What that "more" is, however, remains to be seen. . . .
Yes, the dialogue and certain scenes were forced--we see so little of Tyler and the DHS agents to really get more than a slight feel for them. But they are really just filler to get to the VINCAT core anyway, so I didn't mind.
I LOVED that the proposal came from a place of KNOWING that choosing to be together meant having to take on a life that neither sought out BUT feels compelled to take moving forward. And all of those insecurities that came about as a result of Season 2 are actually JUST under the surface still. VinCat will have to deal with things as they are forced into the open moving forward.
MY SCORE: "A." Even though the "filler" and other stuff that might have been unrealistic or the pace to fast, etc. None of that detracted FOR ME from the emphasis of VinCat and what they face moving forward. I also HIGHLY APPROVED that Brad Kern (still inwardly cursing the man's name for Season 2 issues, but trying to see his chance at redemption) and writers SUBTLY brought up certain Season 2 problems. We got to SEE Cat's suffering when she struggles with Destiny and whether or not she is failing to simply enjoy everything she DOES have in their love. And how in every conversation with the DHS agents, she DEFENDS VIncent and his right to a life of his OWN choosing, even though she inwardly thinks they need to do something. And how AGAIN when VinCat seek to make decisions independently based on PROTECTING the one that doesn't know, it always goes to the realm of Hades in a handbasket.
--I LIKED that we see how DRIVEN both of them are and how each still has their own ideas for what they look like together. Vincent still LIKED that whole suburban life from "Ever After" even though he acknowledged at the time that Cat needs more than to be just his bedmate. "Love" to Cat is the FULL PACKAGE which includes meaning and destiny, things Vincent would prefer to ignore while staying in his blissful marital compound where all others with agendas are told to stay out (and do so willingly. Fat chance, Vincent. You will ALWAYS have to fight for this, but hey, the BEAUTY is WORTH IT!!). And that PASSION. SO worth fighting for!
--Also LOVED the CLOTHING CHOICE of Cat's 215 JACKET that comes back on when she is in the middle of the mission and his hit by Tyler. Flashes me back to 215 AND THE STRUGGLE BETWEEN VINCAT at the time between the duty owed to the mission, the case, and the potential victim. YET after all that in 215, Vincent got to PEEL that particular jacket off Cat and reconnect, because of the mutual LOVE and mutual desire to save others that was found in that episode. SAME issues moving forward here, so appropriate use of the jacket--also let me know that Vincent would make the ultimate same choice HERE as he did THERE!

Am I the only one who's still trying to calm down and breathe properly??? I must have watched the episode a billion times already. And that proposal scene has been replayed like there's no tomorrow! I'm so happy they're back, now can next week hurry up and be here already!!! So many cute moments within the episode, loving the music as always. And Ed Sheeran for that end scene, perfect My heart is beating way too fast, good thing I can share my feelings and thoughts here! Awesome episode, but ended too quickly as always. If each episode from now on can please be a feature length movie, I'd very much appreciate that

Oh hey, and WELCOME to the Forum, Mocha83!!
Anyone that starts out saying that VinCat are meant to be is OF COURSE loved and most welcomed in my book!! Shows your OBVIOUS intelligence with the heart of a born romantic. (I mean, had Brad Kern accepted this most OBVIOUS of facts early LAST season, I am convinced we wouldn't have lost so many viewers back then!)
And really, VinCat was wonderful in this episode. I LOVED how Jay played Vincent in all his insecurities in this episode--from blissful in the moment with Cat, to sexy-with-his-lady, to insecure and angry. I also loved the seemingly saddened and resolved-to-his-fate Vincent that we see on the rooftop at the end, right before his blissful love-conquers-all happiness bursting out from her saying "yes." And seeing KK both crying and laughing at once in the acceptance of the proposal, so much so that Vincent just HAS to make sure she is saying yes. They both really had to play the emotional gamut in this episode, which I thought they did fabulously (as always).

And SearchingForAbeast--AMEN!!!
Next week CANNOT get here quick enough (which is why I will AGAIN harass the poor Canadians for each and every detail and scene, even though I am trying to go Cold Turkey on spoilers--but then again, look how well "cold turkey" ever worked for VinCat!).
And I think we ALL would like the episode to go later than an hour, PARTICULARLY to have a movie rating that is higher than what the small television screen will allow!!

I mean, let's admit it. WHO WOULDN'T have wanted a NC-17 version of the proposal! THINK about it--that also counts for make-up sex since they HAD just argued. . . .and on the roof again, too! (REALLY want the satellite google version from above looking down on THAT rooftop ending!)
(Sorry, but with VinCat, you just NATURALLY end in the gutter. No matter how poetic they get on my screen!)

We really did see the VinCat of old; the essence S1. Like you have mentioned V is realizing that the people he loves and cares about deeply are his "family". I'm guessing that from S2, V's memory erase/reprogramming has now put him in a state of being this small fish in a big pond. As an individual he's trying to regain some of that confidence that he, along with Cat worked so hard to maintain prior to his abduction and when they got back together towards the end of S2. This is essentially another reset button for VinCat and there is always going to be the unexpected portion of control over their lives; that kind that comes along with the territory as well as making tough, life-changing decisions together.
I completely understand Cat's concern for the new breed of beasts potentially on the loose. She's going with her heart and including V in her concerns, What the DHS dudes fail to project for me is that this problem with the new hybrid beasts is a much bigger problem than all involved realize. Cat, more than anything, wants to help "protect" these news breeds from further self-destruction. That's essentially what's going to come down to it. However they number is, it can't be for a good cause; with potentially being a threat to society and all. Like VinCat have a chance being the good that that reaches out to these hybrid beasts. Do we have another "Muirfield" on our hands? Maybe. I'm excited to see VinCat take that journey together.

A few random thoughts on two of Ksitetv's "jumble of thoughts":
I saw a tweet from Stu about them checking into why the broadcast version is darker than their actual filmed version.
But I'm wondering for those who actually watched it on your TV on the CW, not off the internet, did you feel it was too dark?
Maybe its my TVs, but the lighting was just fine. I have it on DVR and checked the lighting on two of my best TVs and I have no issue with the lighting. When I see gifs of the opening roof top scene and the proposal scene on the internet, they do seem very dark. But when I look at my DVR-ed CW recording, they are much brighter compared to what I see posted.
I've seen other comments about this elsewhere too. IMHO, although Vincent has killed in the past, it had mostly been in order to save someone else or in self defense. The exception being the start of S2 where he was brainwashed/programmed to hunt and destroy beasts. In S2, this led to Cat giving the same ultimatum in "Man or Beast" and Vincent chose to try and kill. I might be wrong, but ever since that S2 episode, I don't think Vincent has actually killed someone, he seemed more intent on saving the innocent.
The scene in this episode was almost an exact replay of the "Man or Beast" situation. So much so, that Cat seemed to be uttering almost the exact words from "Man or Beast" and her expression was also a near carbon copy (talk about deja vu). But this time Vincent chose not to kill. Showing that their love or Cat's power over him can now control his beast.
The other thing I found very interesting about the battle scene is that his beast is continuing to evolve. The beast here was an enraged beast with crazy blood red eyes, we've not seen that before. While Cat can tame the beast for now, it's not a given that it stays that way.

While Cat can tame the beast for now, it's not a given that it stays that way. i have heard comments from a few people who watched it on tv and said it was just fine also the HD version is amazing ! but i do think it shoudl genearlly be a tad bit lighter and yes i agree that scene was there on purpose - clear reference to season 8 demonstrating they are in a different place
