One thing Muirfield is right about. I think V fears he will hurt Cat. He doesn’t fully trust himself yet still w/ Cat.

Seriously, this will be my last post. Trying to type and put on jacket at same time. Just LOVE the song that played at the beginning while Vincent was out walking around (which sexy as all get-out shot, by the way). Said song is Noel Gallagher's "Everybody's On the Run" and it is just SO perfect. After finishing watching said episode at home, I WILL be playing this song on repeat. I mean, Noel's crooning with Jay going across my screen--literally, does it get any better than that? And will all this drool on my computer keyboard be good for it? Probably not, especially with the below freezing temperatures. (Okay, now leaving the office. With visions of Vincent rocking out to Noel Gallagher in my mind. Yeah, good image.) And will also freely admit this, I don't care if there IS snow on the ground and I get frozen in the office building, I MUST be hear for the AMP re-watch. Just saying. That episode playing would probably melt the snow outside. This one, not quite yet, since Vincent and Catherine technically aren't together yet. But you just KNOW after this episode that they are going to be. LOL. I think there is gonna be a lot of people here for the AMP rewatch as well as the Insatiable rewatch

Love that V was there to witness Cat’s homerun and that he gives her the game ball.

Love their fire escape talk and that Cat tells him that shes gonna have questions. I love how open they are with each other and that they discuss how they are feeling about Muirfield & everything that has happened and who Vincent is. This is the moment, that Cat decides to resolve with herself the things that Vincent has done. This was a game changing point. She knew that she either had to accept what the past was and what had happened or she had to let go and move on. Thankfully she chose to accept and resolve herself with the situation

I so enjoyed reading all your posts....LIKE, LIKE and more LIKE!!!!! Sorry I missed the rematch, too much marking to do...but I love this episode especially for the growth I see in VinCat's relationship, they really cement their connection and it is already clear that no matter who or what comes their way, they are inseparable, they have each other's back, they will defy all the odds..(Alex, Gabe and Tori, you did not have a leg to stand on!)

Here are my thoughts about "Basic Instinct." Episode opens with Vincent taking another of his solitary night walks and, when he hears the faint heartbeat of someone in trouble, he does what he's always does, tries to help. This time the victim is holding his own, so Vincent delivers him to an emergency unit. There is something else different about Batman's, I mean Vincent's, mysterious savior routine, and that is he has someone he can turn to, someone who will investigate the crime and maybe find justice. I loved the athletics in that rescue scene, everything about Vincent's movements suggested a touch of the wild, gifts from the various species he'd been injected with. Y'all know that I'm a freak by now, so I'll just go ahead and say that Vincent jumping from fire escape to fire escape then crouching like a big cat on top of the dumpster was sexy. The close up of his fingers checking for a pulse wasn't bad either. On to Catherine practicing with the rest of her team for a softball game against NYFD. I loved how cute and inept she was, and what the heck was she doing out in the field? Day dreaming? The cute meet between Vincent and Catherine was adorable. On the one hand, she's anxious because someone could easily discover Vincent and on the other, she's pleased to see him, and annoyed that they're interrupted by Joe who only wants to play ball. I loved how Vincent stepped in and threw the ball out for her. First of all, we got to see some Vincent skin and this is never a bad thing. Secondly, and I don't know how to explain this, but it just felt strangely intimate. He was showing off his prowess in another way and backing up his girl (even though they weren't a couple yet). I loved Joe's and Tess's expressions when the perfectly thrown ball landed in Joe's mitt. Also, liked Tess's FU glare at Joe when he made the crack about them hustling because they weren't in a nail salon. One more thing I liked...how the baseball game allowed a "compare/contrast" between Cat and Tess. Tess is clearly a jock-ette and Catherine is a girly-girl. Well, not like Heather is a girly-girl, but compared to Tess she is. You could almost see the hair standing up on the back of JT's neck when Vincent said he was helping Cat. JT clearly doesn't like the idea that Vincent is keeping in touch with her and worried about her affect on his friend. "If anything happens to you, it's on her!" Sure thing, JT, but you'll be there to bail him out just the same. Meanwhile, Catherine is snatched off the street by Muirfield agents. She puts up a good fight, but the body slam to the ground should have left some major bruises. Anyway, Ari, I mean Silverfox, tries to persuade Cat to turn Vincent in by offering up information about her long-dead, morally and ethically challenged mother. When that doesn't work he plays on her fear by showing her some damaging photographs from Vincent's beast gone wild days. Cat lets Ari (hell, I'm sticking with Ari, it's a much cooler name than Silverfox) get under her skin and then, for good measure, he threatens to come after her again if she doesn't comply. Cat is rattled when Vincent shows up at her apartment and doesn't immediately holster her gun. She lets what she knows to be true about Vincent be shoved aside by Ari's revelations of brutal murders and innocent civilians, in particular a man named Simon Holmes. Vincent senses her disquiet, but wrongly assigns it to her being kidnapped by Muirfield. Cat can't seem to get rid of Vincent fast enough and when he disappears quietly she seems surprised that he didn't hang around for more rejection. I get the impression that Catherine doesn't know what she's going to do about Ari's ultimatum. The fact that she doesn't tell Vincent everything about the meeting, and that she's nervous and jumpy, almost of afraid of the man she's falling for, doesn't bode well. Next day, Cat and Tess continue working on their case, and Vincent tells JT what happened. JT freaks out and is ready to pull up stakes and head for the hills, but Vincent refuses to leave Catherine alone and unprotected now that Muirfield knows about her. The next scene between Vincat makes me sad and pissed. I'm sad because Vincent was allowing himself to believe that he could have something of a normal existence because of Catherine. I was sad because he loved her and trusted her and she was pretty much slamming the door in his face without a hearing. I was pissed because Catherine SHOULD have known better, but she was being judgmental again--after knowing what had happened to Vincent and the hell he'd gone through--she decided to cling to one side of the story, Muirfield's. It was bad enough when she stepped back when he approached her, but then she had to go and add insult to injury. Catherine's tone was harsh, almost ugly, when she asked Vincent if he planned on stopping Muirfield by killing more people. She topped that gem by reminding him that she was a cop and that she put people like him away. Vincent was deeply hurt and he left. Cat did not win any points by having the good grace to look confused, upset and uncertain after her performance. Meanwhile, Vincent found the burden of his presence in Catherine's and JT's life too heavy. The only way he could keep her safe, protect them both, and give them the chance to live normal lives was to turn himself in. This is one of the reasons why I love Vincent. He doesn't think twice about putting himself in danger if the people he loves are threatened. JT was beside himself when he found Vincent gone. (I have a feeling he would have done more serious damage to Catherine with his bat if he hadn't found Vincent's note and vials of blood.) And I loved his reaction--not to mention his phone call to Catherine. I thawed a little towards Catherine when she realized the full consequence of her damning words to Vincent. She looked as if someone had knocked the air out of her when JT told her that Vincent had gone to Muirfield. Cat was halfway back in my good graces when she rushed to the warehouse. The scene between Cat and JT working together to find Vincent was good. I liked the tenseness and sniping between them and their ability to rise above it for Vincent. JT didn't know what the hell Vincent was thinking to have done this, but Catherine knew full well what he was thinking and why. But seriously. All it took was JT confirming what she used to know for her to get her head straight? Yeah, it's freaky when Vincent gets "like that," but Vincent would never hurt him. "How do you?" she asked. "I just know," JT replied. Cat and JT bust Ari's little "let's take Vincent back to the lab and mess him up" party and I'm back on Cat's side. Cat wants her man back and is ready to throw down with bullets. Team Vincat eliminate Ari and his men. Catherine aligned herself firmly with Vincent when she asked, "Will more of them come after us?" Vincent looked conflicted and confused when Cat left. It seemed as if he couldn't believe that she came for him and fought like hell to keep him safe and free. And I thought she couldn't believe he was worried about "their" case and her. At the end of the big blow up, I think both of them were left with a lot of questions about each other. Finally, I loved that Vincent sent Cat a text to let her know that he was on the fire escape because it said he was unsure of where he stood with her, and that he didn't know how she felt about him. The expression on her face (after getting the text message) indicated she didn't know how to face him or what to say to him. I think Cat was surprised that Vincent had watched the game at a distance. No matter how hurtful the last few days had been, he hadn't severed ties with her. I really liked how they were completely honest with each other on the fire escape. He shared his hope, pain and vulnerability. She shared her conflict, faith and trust. In the end, they confirmed their commitment to the relationship. And that was just awesome. So, I liked this episode (once again) for the Vincat stuff and oh, yeah...Ari's appearance. Oh, and alwayscrazedbatbfan, Vincent is a lot of things (all manly goodness), but precious isn't one of them. What do you think he is The One Ring? But I know what you mean and I like that you tried.

Arwenfan,
I maintain that in Season 1, with that hair all sexy long like it was and when he did that adorable little-boy-lost look where his hair would just fall in his eyes just so, then Vincent was precious in a manly way. However, now you have me just imagining Catherine holding Vincent close to her while stroking his hair and saying, "My Precious, My Precccioouss!" (HeeHeeHee!)! One ring indeed! (And hey, I DO want them to put a ring on each one of them fingers next season!! So WhoHoo to the One Gold Ring for each one of their fingers!)
And you know I will have to just add this (small) defense for Catherine's actions in this episode. With all the disclosures that were coming out about her mother, Catherine's ability to trust was on empty to begin with, especially since Catherine already knows that Vincent has withheld information from her as well. Catherine's mother was the person that she had been closest to in her whole life. Yet, there was this WHOLE other side to her mother that Catherine had never known. And it is a pretty giant part of her mom's life that was withheld from her and caused so much damage ultimately that no wonder Catherine is at her limit with her ability to determine who and what information can be trusted and why.
And I don't think it is that Catherine didn't trust Vincent--it was more a fact that Catherine did not trust Vincent's beast side--even Vincent admits he didn't strike these people intending to kill them, but he could not control the force with which he used to get attackers like Simon away from their victims (and hey, maybe that says something about my moral compass, but I certainly shed no tears for the rapists Vincent ended up putting in the ground--if those guys hadn't been doing wrong to begin with, Vincent wouldn't have felt the need to intervene on behalf of the victims. But I am glad that Catherine is the type of cop that tries to follow the letter of the law and do the right thing where possible.). Catherine is hit with the full-out moral ambiguities of Vincent's situation, and she struggles with it at first in trying to figure out just what the right thing is.
And giving Catherine full credit--she is beaten and taken by Muirfield agents. They clearly imply that if she does not give Vincent up, she will be further tortured and most likely killed. Yet Catherine never gives Vincent up. And that was the genius of Silverfox's plan in that he does not HAVE to get the information from Catherine--he knew that he COULD let Catherine go and that would get Vincent to most likely made contact since Vincent would NOT want Catherine's death on his conscience. Silverfox fails to understand the deep abiding ties to one another that Vincent and Catherine ultimately have already forged. His plan works in that Vincent won't risk Catherine so gives himself up. Silverfox just underestimates Catherine's loyalty and willingness to do anything to protect Vincent in return. Because Catherine IS willing to risk life and career to come for Vincent. So when she has to firmly make a decision about whose side she will be on, Catherine certainly doesn't hesitate in choosing Vincent.
And it has to still be frustrating to Catherine that Vincent won't trust her with the full information that he knows about her mother. So the trust issues do, in fact, go both ways, with Catherine having some resentment for not being fully informed of everything. For Catherine, Vincent hasn't been forthcoming yet Muirfield offers to fill in the missing pieces. So although Catherine really doesn't trust them, she still has some of that built-in anger that Vincent hasn't told her what he knows. And YES, I get why Vincent hasn't done so. And I will say here that the original Season 1 plotline that the writers/showrunners were originally working with about further disclosures about Muirfield and Catherine's/Vanessa's past which we never ultimately got to know due to the decision to end all things Muirfield in beginning of Season 2 (and I am aluding to the scene in the "heart Of Darkness" where Evan figures out that Vincent knows what he found in Vanessa's file, and Vincent says that they CAN'T tell Catherine what it says. And so we will now never know where they were originally going with that. So even to the end of Season 1, Vincent was still holding out information, although he sincerely believed that it was in Catherine's best interests to do so.) I still in my own heart believe that Vincent didn't come forward with his full knowledge of Vanessa and Muirfield to Catherine because he knew that the information would have been so explosive that it would have made Catherine heck-bent on a showdown with Muirfield that she would not have survived.
And that brings up another important scene/moment in this episode. Old Silverfox is able to get to Vincent as well as Catherine, even though Vincent has seen up close and personal Muirfield's evilness. Silverfox hits Vincent where he was most vulnerable in Season 1: his inability to fully control his beastly state. Vincent IS afraid, on some level, that he will physically hurt Catherine, let alone mentally. (We see how this intense fear even pervades his dreams in AMP. So Vincent is always concerned that he could not control himself and end up hurting her, which he knows he could not live with.) Silverfox says to Vincent that THAT is the problem, his fear that he will hurt her. And you see how close to home that hits for Vincent and how conflicted his facial expression in. Vincent can't and won't risk hurting Catherine. (Which just says how much he loves her already.)
It really takes Catherine jumping back into the mix and facing off against the Muirfield guys in front of him to once again bring Vincent back to his senses. And when Catherine makes a choice, she is all in. I mean, there were no prisoners taken in this one. It was always going to have to be a shootout with one side or the other coming out on top. So Catherine shoots to kill rather than see Vincent dead. For Vincent, it is like Catherine is saying that she would rather risk the Beast hurting her unintentionally than see Vincent deliberately dead or experimented on further. And obviously, there is going to be no justice in the sense of the Muirfield guys being made to pay in the prison system. So Catherine does have to toss out her sense of following things through the legal system and just going with saving Vincent, even with all the unknowns that both of them still have about his Beast state.
So I think that the above is another reason why Vincent texts Catherine to see if she will still come out to spend time with him or if she is just going to keep her distance. Vincent knows that Catherine is having to go into a morally ambiguous life in dealing with shady underground organizations that have government sanction. And Catherine has to accept that Vincent won't give her answers and information that she wants. And Catherine simply may not be willing to take on the full burden that knowing Vincent REALLY entails, especially if Vincent is ultimately unable to control his Beast side. Yet Vincent sees that Catherine is still willing to move forward and NOT distance herself from Vincent. And each then accepts one another's doubts and fears and the burden to BOTH of them in moving forward with a relationship.
This episode was really all about the depth of the budding Romance for me. Both Catherine and Vincent see the full potential risk and burden that a relationship will bring to them. Yet the surface doubts never push away the instinctual trust that each has for the other. And each puts the other person FIRST above the individual's own safety. Both risk their lives and risk torture for the other person in this episode. So each has to inwardly know the sobering thought moving forward of JUST how far each is willing to do to not only protect the other person BUT to have an ongoing relationship. Even knowing it could end violently if Vincent IS unable to control his Beast state. And by "Any Means Possible," Catherine's innate trust of Vincent is stronger even then his faith in himself and his abilities, so Catherine really just needed time and confirmation of the relationship, especially given that the person she had loved most previously, her mother, had so much to hide and did so much damage, whether intentional or not.

And you know I will have to just add this (small) defense for Catherine's actions in this episode. With all the disclosures that were coming out about her mother, Catherine's ability to trust was on empty to begin with, especially since Catherine already knows that Vincent has withheld information from her as well. Beg to differ. Vincent had no memory of specifics (including Catherine's unethical, morally-challenged mother) until "Trapped," when he was suffering the blackouts, which were later revealed to be a side effect of his evolution, then he told her (and JT) what he remembered about the Muirfield experiment. And I STILL have a problem with her sudden lack of trust when she had seen Vincent's volatile (and murderous) beast side several times prior to Ari's appearance. Yep, it's times like these when it's hard to remember she's supposed to be a top notch detective. She had no problem with the "moral ambiguities" when Vincent took out her attackers on the subway deck or when he body slammed the bicyclist so hard he was dead on arrival. Lo siento, can't. Because... The jury is STILL out on what she would have done. She didn't "give up on Vincent" until she found out he had gone over to the dark side because of her lack of trust and fear, and to spare her anymore Muirfield visits. Conjecture. She has no reason to believe Vincent hasn't told her everything he knows and even if she does, we know that he doesn't (see "Trapped"). Ari (or Silverfox, if you will) told Catherine HE would give her details. Ari's knowledge doesn't extend to Vincent or make him complicit. What was toyed with but never brought to the screen is irrelevant. Ditto for Evan. For all we know, the "big secret" was Bob Reynolds. But that was after "Trapped," so it doesn't support the idea that Vincent was being less than truthful about UMC Vanessa in "Basic Instinct." No argument with this. Well, as usual, I don't necessarily agree with everything in these two paragraphs, but I do like the way you make your case. Me, too. In the words of Ichabod Crane, "Huzzah!"

Arwenfan, (And by the by, you did make me nearly laugh hard enough to crack a rib with that "huzzah" stuff!) And since you quoted Ichabod, I get to quote Buffy.
For my last lines of defense for Catherine (and other reasons why I LOVE this episode so much for its implications about the developing VinCat relationship), I will just give a quote from a favorite Buffy/Angel moment and Buffy's line of defense for her actions in that episode, "Love makes you do the wacky." Here, Catherine is trying so hard to protect her heart from succumbing to love that she is quick to doubt her own instincts, hence the title of this episode.
You just see Catherine RELATE so to the young girl in this episode, which is why I actually liked the case-of-the-week for this alone. Girl and Boy were in love, yet due to their situations and his past history, the girl was vulnerable to attack regarding his previous proclivities. Because deep down, she thought she wasn't enough to hold him or that she wouldn't be enough for him to change for. And even though it is unjust, the girl just is not secure enough in herself to not believe the accusations of her mother, even though in her heart she never stops loving the boy or believing in him. And when Catherine gets it, she really GETS it, and she says that the mother has caused the Girl to doubt what she really KNOWS is true, that he loved her and would do anything to be with her. So Catherine is admitting that she KNOWS deep down that Vincent would never hurt her and finally gets that.
Why Catherine just breaks my heart at times in Season 1 is that she is so quick to try to put back up the armored walls around her heart that Vincent so quickly just knocks down naturally. In "Insatiable," she admits she is surprised Vincent is there in the morning and that he is the first man that she has actually envisioned a future with. So her trust issues clearly run deep and are not just because of her mother. So YES, I still cut her some slack. (And I also cut Vincent some slack for his actions in "Saturn Returns," as we all know that his brushoff of Catherine is because he wants to protect her, NOT because he doesn't want to be with her.) But Catherine is vulnerable, something that causes her to react by pushing Vincent away and doubting him. But when she realizes what she has done, she tries to make it right and keep Vincent from ending up like the boy in the hospital. So yeah, Love makes her do the wacky and close off and try to protect herself. But she ultimately just can't help herself where Vincent is concerned, and she can never truly let him go once he has entered her life. And she risks her life for him as well, all without knowing where they will end up at the end of it all. She just wants him safe and will do anything to protect him.
So again, Catherine's vulnerabilities and doubts (and yes, hang-ups) make me love her more and love that Vincent accepts all of this about her. And hey, even his own fiancée who has known him all her life can't ever fully trust him again after seeing his beast-side, so I don't find myself holding it against Catherine for taking time to adjust to the situation. And Catherine tries to right the wrongs when she is made aware of them. With everything hitting them and threatening to destroy them both, they ultimately cling together and pull themselves through together. Which was what I just loved.
Finally, it is what it is as far as what I loved the most about Season 1 VinCat. Each of them are so vulnerable and hurt and withdrawn and really need the other to call each other out on their actions. Each tries to push each other away because each realizes the risk to the other one, both mentally and actual physical harm from Muirfield, in continuing a relationship. But neither can really resist the Pull to one another and the understanding of each one's issues because each one actually SHARES the same issues and vulnerabilities. Which just makes them perfect for one another. They are each tattered and torn inside, but they help heal and fix one another through their love. (So can I just add, SO Buffy and Angel and what totally drew me to their relationship as well. And Peter and Olivia. And Season 1 Max and Liz. I mean, SERIOUSLY, just cue up Sheryl Crow's, "I Shall Believe." Completely says it all so much better than I am.)

^^ Loved all of this. Really. BTW, who are Peter & Olivia? I think Max and Liz are from Roswell, but I never watched that show and have no interest in them. Finally, as much as I LOVED Buffy & Angel, Vincent & Catherine have overshadowed their relationship a thousand times in terms of dealing with adversity thrown at them and holding on to each other. Ultimately, that's what annoyed me most about Whedon's treatment of B & A. It galled me to no end that Buffy couldn't make things work with the vampire who loved her, but couldn't shake the psycho braggart Spike. I liked Spike in small doses, but once he became THE LEADING man I was done. Back to Vincat, I can't imagine Catherine walking away from Vincent if giving him a happy caused him to tear up the town (literally). They would find a way to deal with it. As you said, they're all in.
