Hothead Review
I watched this episode in the early hours to begin with and did not love it. Second time round I really liked it though not my favourite of the season
Let me start with what I didn’t like so I can then move on to what really worked.
The one thing I didn’t like is that in writing the story the writers often do not think about the details. This happened lots in season one but was much improved in season two so I was annoyed when I first watched this episode. The issues were:
- The nephew – yes I understand he would not remember Vincent, but surely does he not have any pictures of Vincent? We know he has not changed much in 10 years!! I thought that was a bit silly really
- Catherine mentions to the nephew – do you know William and Vincent Keller. Does he not ask her how she knows them? Seriously?
- Vincent knew that Gabe was telling the truth because Catherine did not send him? Could he not sense him?
A few other question marks which I am hoping will be answered shortly:
- Murfield was lame; we gathered that in Season 1. Is the FBI lame too? How they dealt with the specific beast was not awfully convincing. Unless of course the FBI is not directly involved with these incidents and it is just Reynolds who works for somebody else and also happens to work for the FBI. Or maybe that beast was not a beast they were interested in? I guess we will find out
- Vincent does whatever the heck he wants it seems. He did not listen to Reynolds at all this episode. So clearly Catherine has an effect on him. But he was honest with Reynolds about what he was doing and how he was feeling. And all Reynolds did at this stage is advise him to stay away from Catherine and anything that could trigger memories. If I were Reynolds, I would be scared. I mean, Vincent is clearly regaining his memory and his humanity. Shouldn’t Reynolds do something about this rather than just offer advice on the phone? Unless of course he decides to do something in the next few episodes, again we shall find out though I would have liked to see a slightly more forceful/scary Reynolds at this stage.
- Reynolds made an appearance in the hospital – so has Vincent seen him before or has just heard his voice?
Loved:
- The honesty in this episode, the lack of honesty was pretty heart breaking last week
- All interactions between Catherine and Tess – thought Tess was a lovely friend and the voice of reason lol
- The scene in the salon/spa I thought was ridiculously cute and funny and relatable
- Vincent’s hotness during workout and interaction with Gabe, that was good!
- Fights with beast, they were done very well
- The interaction between Gabe and Vincent, that was intense and very well played by Jay
- Vincent 2.0 is nearly gone (at the moment anyway), welcome old Vincent, though I will miss Vincent 2.0’s predatory hotness lol
- How Vincent beasts out in the hospital, that was really cool and how he got some of his memories back, I thought that was really well done
- The interactions between Catherine and Vincent were so sweet and honest and reminded me so much of season 1 interactions
- Loved the two small kisses, they were so sweet and genuine
- The last scene was beautiful
- Loved the fact that Catherine forgave him, to me it makes lots of sense and I did point this out last time. I do think they will be apart after episode 8 but probably for a much more serious reason.
-loved the fact that she finds out new things about him, say that he was a fire fighter for a while
Not so sure about
- Cat’s and Tess’s night out. Could have been played out a bit better I think. Not sure I liked the clique guy hitting on Catherine and also thought there are better ways to convey that Cat is in a rather bad place rather than beating up the whole club. Seemed a bit exaggerated to say the least…
- The beasts are getting a bit too freaky, this one is spitting fire? I did say in a previous review, I hope the beasts don’t become too supernatural, what will come next? A beast that flies? Probably…Having said that, I understand that was an easy way for us to find out about Vincent’s fire fighter past so ok
- The use of the machine to bring the beast to life as a human. I had said before that was a lame way to bring Gabe back to life, who buys that? Well clearly this did not work with the other beast, surprise, surprise! Will we ever find out why and how it worked with Gabe? Probably not!
- The special effects used when the arsonist beast first appears in the tunnel – it did look pretty fake
- I am a bit confused with Vincent. So, for the most part in this episode he was the old Vincent, definitely in all his interactions with Catherine. Yet, he can’t tell her what his mission is? I don’t understand why, she kind of knows already anyway! And why does he not yet properly question Reynold’s intentions? Also his interactions with Catherine were like the ones in season 1 once they had been together for a while – reminded me of episodes such as date night and anniversary. Should that have happened a bit later maybe rather than him having a complete u-turn so quickly? All I am saying is I am a bit confused at the moment, they may have rushed his change to the old Vincent a bit and in doing so may have left some question marks. But at the same time I cannot really complain, loved the Catherine-Vincent scenes
Fishy bits…GABE
- Gabe insisting that he wants to help Catherine cause she saved his life and really going all the way to save Vincent – there is something very fishy about that
- Us being reminded 500 times that Gabe likes Catherine – you know, again there is something fishy about that too… what if it is much more complicated than that? I think Gabe will be key in episodes 7 and especially 8
Finally, I did miss poor J.T.!! I really hope he plays a more active role in the coming episodes, he did tweet that he will.
