I see both your points, lilbit and yolie. Really and truly, I do. The thing is emotions are messy, especially when one is confronted with an old love and a new love at the same time. Never mind there is a healthy dose of guilt in Vincent's psychological makeup. He feels guilty for dumping Alex and he feels guilty about having such a negative impact (his perception) on Catherine's life. I firmly believe that it isn't an either/or situation, it is quite possible that he felt both those things and much, much more. Vincent is very conflicted throughout this arc and I give kudos to JR for the subtle shading in his performance reflecting this. A lot of times when Vincent's lips were moving I was thinking, who is he trying to convince; whoever he's talking to at the time or himself? Another thing that I think tipped the scale in Alex's favor is she came across as emotionally wounded and fragile. I mean come on! She thought Vincent was dead for ten years and she's STILL walking around with this enormous torch for him? And then there's my point that characters can never seem to get their points made because someone is always interrupting. When Vincent went to Catherine's I think it was with the intent of settling things between them (getting back to where they were before the accident and shooting), but Catherine was quick to cut him off and brush the moment aside in an attempt to protect herself. And Alex's ill-timed phone call did not help matters. After that, Catherine gave Vincent the impression that she was already out the door emotionally and gives him the opportunity to drag up his history with Alex yet again. By the time Catherine admitted that loved him and was ready to fight for him (a fantastic scene, BTW), Vincent had pretty much decided to go along with "doing the right thing" by making up for his earlier treatment of Alex and "living the fantasy" by running away to some obscure part of the world where (hopefully) Muirfield wouldn't find him and everyday life wouldn't provoke him and he could get back to practicing medicine (a profession he clearly loved). I can see him rationalizing that no matter what he felt for her, Catherine would be better off without him in her life, and that of the two women, she was the stronger and more resourceful. She would put him in the rear view mirror of her life and get on with it. Catherine wouldn't be caught dead mourning some long lost love ten years later. Thoughts? When JT and Vincent had that talk after the Alex towel insident .. I saw conflict in Vincent...He was *totally* confused. I got that he was in termoil as what he had to do and wanted to do. ..So I know where you xraygirl and arwenfan are coming from. In m yoriginal post when I first saw this episode when it aired..I was ONE if not the first to say that the end convo when Vincent said "Would you?" I sensed and could see NOT only fear for her to say no but the wish that she would say yes. So I get what you guys are saying...I just wish it would have been clearer and that Vincent wouldn't have been such an ass trying to come to the final conclusion that Catherine was who *he* wanted all along. I also believe that Catherine would have moruned him 10 years later...She was already distraught in the episode cause she was losing him and didn't understand why. <--- her own words to the shrink! So the same way she struggles with the loss of her mother she would have done the same for him. Just my 2 cents..is it worth that? LOL Absolutely! I saw the hesitation and fear in Vincent's eyes/face during that convo with Catherine about giving up her life and running away with him. It was definitely there. You are right, though, it was not made clear. Although I agree that Vincent sees Catherine as a strong, independent woman versus Alex who is more like a damsel in distress, I am not certain that I buy into the fact that Vincent would choose Alex over Catherine because of that. Yes, he knows Catherine can take care of herself; but he also knows the depth of her guilt which is so similar to his own. He knows just how sensitive and how broken she was having blamed herself for her Mom's death and then taking responsiblity to "fix" the situation with Vincent. I, too, believe that Catherine would grieve for Vincent 10 years later. She truly feels comfortable with Vincent. More importantly, she feels comfortable with herself when she is with him. JMHO.

Besides, it's not like Catherine hasn't had her share of ass-holiness moments prior to and after On Thin Ice.

^ Yolie, when I went to open the clips they state they are "private." Not that I am dying to see them, but I do want to refresh my memory as to why I was so disgruntled - LOL!! BTW, if you are going to bother with the "On Thin Ice" clips, you have to include the ice skating rink scene. As I recall, this is the scene that really made me hurt for Catherine and wonder what the heck the writers were thinking. It helped make the story of Alex and Vincent believable. Let's be honest, Bridget and Jay had some great chemistry which is why we were all so upset.
