Yup, the writers do leave holes and have inconsistencies for sure OTOH, Catherine's behavior with Gabe is more puzzling and less acceptable in ep 12-14. I won't even begin to try to explain or defend that one, especially not in this "Ancestors" thread. totally agree with the bold part , i won't repeat myself as a broken record , i would shorten it in one sentence : "Ancestors" was Vincent's lowest point and "Redemption" was Cat's lowest point ! each one of them started slowly to raise up again after his/her point till they returned to themselves -- they were finally in the same page and in their beautiful nature again in "Beast is the new black" and i still like your theory and i wish if the writers gave the storyline the same care and attention you give it ! lets just hope they got their lesson clear and they won't make black holes written in S3 !

I FIRST have to get this out of my system, before I post further. Please bear with me. I HATE THIS EPISODE! I HATE THIS EPISODE! I HATE THIS EPISODE! There, I feel better. I can now rationally post my thoughts.
The writers DID have a plan for this season. It was to show that VinCat is truly BETTER together rather than apart. They are individuals that WANT to Save Others and be the best versions of themselves. And they are able to do this INDIVIDUALLY when they are TOGETHER. So "Ancestors" has an Actual Purpose. (Please insert my grumbling here. I get why they did it. Still didn't like it. HAVE to keep saying this, just to keep what little sanity I might still have left.)
In "Ancestors," we see the same resentful/hurt Vincent that we saw in "Liar, Liar." When Vincent thinks Cat has betrayed him in 203, he "fakes" the memory. Really hurts Cat. All because he THOUGHT that she was using their relationship to manipulate him AND didn't want to really be with him. In "Ancestors," Vincent is STILL hurting from the break-up, despite the Tori-fogged beast amplification effect that is over him. I mean, Tori has basically not left his side, and ADD that to Vincent's feelings of Betrayal from Bob AND Catherine, Vincent is a powder keg just LOOKING for an excuse to go off. So that is WHY he is SO ANXIOUS to pursue those that went after JT AND to explore his whole "beast heritage." He needs SOMETHING to keep him occupied to try to erase the hurt and anger.
You see when Vincent tracks the killed thief to his cohorts at the bar and finds Cat there. Vincent, WHO IS A MASTER TRACKER, isn't able to figure out WHY he ended up there, once he sees Cat. AND YOU SEE THE LOOK ON HIS FACE as well as the fact that he AUTOMATICALLY takes a STEP TOWARDS CAT. Doesn't really care about the people she is with. He still INWARDLY TRUSTS Cat to make sense of what is happening and why is ended up in this particular bar.
Once Cat sees Vincent starting to come towards her, with Tori as well, Cat panics. She IS undercover, and Vincent WILL unknowingly blow her cover IF he comes over to her. Because he would call her by her name. So Catherine does the ONE THING that she KNOWS will ensure that Vincent won't come to her--she kisses Patrick. Cat is NOT doing this to hurt Vincent. She HAS to protect the mission. Maybe deep down inside, she MAY still want to hurt Vincent. But I truly think that this is the ONLY surefire way to ensure that Vincent does NOT approach Cat.
However, once Cat kisses Patrick, Vincent DOES react in pain and hurt. He thinks Cat is TRYING to hurt him and bait him. He never even considers that she might be undercover. So Vincent acts as he acted in "Liar, Liar." He reacts by trying to spite Cat. ALL because he MISINTERPRETS her actions.
And Cat DOES try to explain herself to Vincent at the Russian embassy. She lets him KNOW that she was undercover. Which tells you HOW MUCH Cat DOES still care--as in "Liar, Liar," Cat doesn't want Vincent to remain hurt. She wants him to know WHY she acted the way she did. But Vincent is STILL SO SPITEFUL. Maybe Vincent just doesn't buy it. Maybe he is just too hurt.
And while Cat may SAY that she could SO EASILY shoot Vincent, the reality is that CAT LETS THE UNDERCOVER MISSION FAIL RATHER THAN HARM VINCENT. She chooses Vincent over her profession. She actually would have been in the LEGAL RIGHT to have shot Vincent. But she doesn't. And her hand trembles so. And she asks Vincent what has happened to him.
At this point, Vincent DOES THE INEXCUSABLE, in my estimation, which is why I still HATE this episode. He LEAVES CAT TO DIE. Yes, we all know that Cat has great skills and most likely would get herself out alive. But Vincent never looks back, never checks to make sure that this has happened. And if Cat had been caught in that embassy, she would have been tortured and sold into slavery. Period. And Vincent would KNOW this. No matter HOW angry Vincent was with Cat in "Liar, Liar," he STILL tried to save her from Sebastian and keep her out of harm's way. In fact, the very reason he faked the memory was to hopefully keep Cat away while he finished off Sebastian. Because Cat's Safety was still Vincent's Number One Priority in episode 203. Not so in "Ancestors."
And remember, Tori is NOT in the embassy. And Vincent techically has the gem at this point. So he should have responded to Cat and not left her to die, at least, in theory. HOWEVER, as I have said before, with VinCat, they need that FINAL STEP of TALKING through their decisions and motivations with one another. And Vincent just leaves, preventing this from happening. So you need "Held Hostages" for that moment when Cat IS able to talk to Vincent ABOUT WHO HE USED TO BE and about his values to SAVE OTHERS. Because when Vincent hears that shot in the precinct, he realizes that he CAN'T just LEAVE Cat as he did in the previous episode. He HAS to help. Because Cat is right about him. She makes him be the VERSION OF HIMSELF that he hears about from her. He wants to be the kind of person that Cat could love. Because he DOES value her opinion and assessment of the situation and the motivation for action.
So "Ancestors" is necessary. We have to see how low Vincent can sink. And how Cat is beginning the same downward trek herself. Because they really ARE better Together rather than apart. So we have to see Vincent struggle alone with his rage and impulses before liking the Best Version of Himself that he is with Cat, the person that can bask in love and FIGHT the selfish animal/beast instincts to protect oneself and harm others that would thwart one's urges. THAT is why Vincent CHOOSES to fight to FIND HIMSELF by using the version of himself that CAT would want to love in Episodes 213 and 214.
And once Vincent makes that turning point in 211, we recognize him again. Because he is FINDING HIMSELF by WORKING HIS WAY BACK TO CAT. And we have to see Cat DECLINE and LOSE HERSELF, because she fights getting back with Vincent and towards Gabe. Who is no better for her than Tori was for Vincent.
Still hate "Ancestors." Still hate "Ancestors." Bad Vincent, leaving Cat to die. Good Vincent, realizing that he WANTS to be the kind of man that Cat could love, who fights to SAVE others, even at the risk of his own life, which we see re-emerge in 211.
