Probably no one in this story is to be blamed for their actions; they are all perfectly understandable - especially Alex Salter. I read many fans saying they blame her for breaking up VinCat but that's not what happened. No one ever tells her the truth until too late. She thought the love of her life was dead, then she thinks there is a second chance. I feel the most sympathy for her even though she is freaked out by his Beast-side.
Even Vincent should probably be forgiven for slipping into fantasy: the weight of his own self-contempt must be a heavy burden.
Catherine behaves as "nobly" as she can even though the context must be very painful. She had just managed to open up her heart through sessions with David the psychiatrist and then Vincent says "Alex is willing to give up her life to go with me" - as if Catherine should make a counter-bid?
Vincent, our hero, is guilty of massive insensitivity in this episode. It is his low-point in Season One (he can go lower in Season Two, as we know). To me what he does to Catherine is almost unforgivable. Not just his cluelessness in the beginning but at the end, when it is clear to him that she loves him as he is not just in fantasy, he comes out with this exchange:
CAT: "Vincent, I can't be your second choice." VINCENT: "You're not." CAT: "Really? Because if Alex had accepted you, you... you'd be with her right now. In that ridiculously romantic cabin." VINCENT: "Not happily. It was never about... taking off with Alex. It was about a better future for me, okay? But I know now that that better future isn't her, Catherine. It's you. I will do whatever it takes to make this right."
This explanation rings hollow to me. I believe Catherine is right; he would have been with Alex now. Except now he realizes what an ass he had been; no matter what Catherine says here, she does actually love him as he is, with his beast inside.
Like I said: I sympathize with him but I'm not proud of him in this episode.

I will be here. I don't want to miss one of my fav scenes, the one in the woods.
Anna, take your time… take care of your daughter. No rush!
Bill, I totally agree with you. As I also explained a year ago I understood Vincent's actions. I did not blame him for his decisions. He was living a fantasy. A fantasy that was his life back then but things changed and that life can not be brought back. People make bad decisions but they learn from it. I also said Catherine told Vincent to go and figure out your feelings. Vincent did exactly that. So Catherine can only blame herself for the situation. Yes, she figured out that she does not want to let him go but it was almost too late. At least that's how I saw it. You just can't have it both ways...

I totally agree with you Bill, actually I didn't hate or find Alex unpleasant, like you I understand her, Catherine and also Vincent and like you I also didn't like the explanation that Vincent gave to Catherine... this words "it was about a better future for me" sounded like if Vincent didn't wanted to be and stay with Catherine... like if he didn't consider the sharing life with her the right one for him I know that later Catherine will understand that what Vincent tried to do was the "right thing" which was trying to be with Alex just to make amends for the tort he did to her ten years before even if... his heart belonged to Catherine and even if... what he did to Alex wasn't a wanted choice but a forced choice but still... I didn't liked what he said to Cat... he just could have explained to her in this way rather then "it was about a better future for me" well.. .this week we started the discussion even before the watching anyway I'm here this week finally with you all

I think these "re-watches" are fantastic. I get to discuss episodes with smart fans and get perspectives that I totally missed before. Case in point: I also said Catherine told Vincent to go and figure out your feelings. Vincent did exactly that. So Catherine can only blame herself for the situation. Boy that is a good point; it was right in front of me and I didn't see it. Even Catherine realizes she sent Vincent running in the other direction. But that is Cat's old defensiveness flaring up as she says at the end: "I need to protect myself right now." I also didn't like the explanation that Vincent gave to Catherine... "it was about a better future for me" sounded like if Vincent didn't wanted to be and stay with Catherine... like if he didn't consider the sharing life with her the right one for him. I know that later Catherine will understand that what Vincent tried to do was the "right thing" which was trying to be with Alex just to make amendsTwo more great points I missed. He could have known his own heart better; he should rather live in NYC and be with Catherine than hide in the jungle with [anyone else]. Also, he was motivated by residual guilt over Alex as much as anything else. By the way: I've never cared for Heather but this episode was a high-point for her. Like they say "out of the mouths of babes": CAT: "Yeah, I know I am supposed to be... strong and move on, but..." HEATHER: "But maybe being strong is following your heart no matter what? Just my own little theory." By the way again: despite what she always says, I thought KK's singing at the end was fine - and I could watch her dance all day long.

OK intro.. Funny tidbit: watching one ep on my tv and this one on my laptop.. Alex: I don't like her, but only because she always has this 'I'm about to burst into tears look'.
