Copied this from the KK BOT thread
On a similar note, I recently watched part of the Pilot of BATB on Netflix for the first time. I noticed that the background music was different. "Midnight City" (in the beginning when Cat's a cop 9 years later, meets up with Z Babe) and "Never let me go" (at the end when Vincent watches over Cat) were both missing! Some other bland background music was playing instead. I think there were other songs that are missing too.
I own the complete BATB DVD box set and also the streaming version from Amazon, so I never bothered to watch it on Netflix. I was shocked that these songs are missing from the Pilot, because they made the Pilot quite memorable for me. I now wonder what else is different from the Netflix version of BATB compared to what aired on the CW or the DVD box set.I have the individual BATB season DVDs and bought each season on iTunes and so had only run the Netflix version in the background but wow, it's not just the Pilot. I checked and car crash music in Bridesmaid Up is different and the opening and closing songs for Any Means Possible are also gone on the Netflix version. Was it always like this? I can't believe someone wouldn't have noticed back when the episodes first went up, unless others were just running it in the background too. I know people have complained about some older shows losing their soundtracks on the DVD and/or streaming platforms because the rights for those hadn't been cleared or were too expensive but I would have thought all of the newer shows would have worked out all of the music licensing and fees across all media nowadays. If I were to start watching Arrow on Netflix, would the songs used on that show be different from the originals too or did someone cheap out when it came to BATB.
Has anyone watched Smallville on Hulu? That show used a ton of songs from groups I'm sure were much more costly to license given we are talking Cold Play, Snow Patrol, REM, etc.
I only checked a couple of episodes from S2 and S3 on Netflix, but those still had the original music so I'm guessing TPTB only licensed the use of the songs for 5 years. Wonder if they couldn't get more than that or it would have been cost prohibitive.
I didn't notice the differences when I watched it on the CW, but I hadn't re-watched the ep since its original CBC broadcast. But now that you mentioned the differences, it does seem odd that certain scenes were edited. Maybe it was shortened to make sure the US commercial times could fit.
