Have to say it: THIS is the BATB that I fell in love with! Adn you don't really even HAVE that many VinCat scenes. BUT it covers so much of their past history and issues and really ties together the feelings and attitudes we have seen from characters this season. Not that I wasn't enjoying season 3 so far, BUT this episode was really STELLAR in showing the complexities of the characters and just WHY they fight (and why they sort of inherited the fight in the first place).
SO BEAUTIFUL emotionally and made you see just WHY you can love (AND WANT TO FIGHT TO KEEP) these characters!! Other than certain moments of 301, I haven't had an episode this season that made me really feel either the full risk of the big-bad or appreciate where the build-up was going. But THIS EPISODE really brings it all home. AND REALLY is a pay-out for the long-time fans, who will LOVE all the tie-ins to previous seasons.
And I felt Jay's acting in this one was really good, PARTICULARLY in playing the dis-connect with his family members. I mean, he only ever watched the younger cousins from afar and wasn't able to interact with them (and they certainly weren't trying to interact wtih him either). And it just showed what was REALLY IMPORTANT to the character of Vincent. And Hank just somehow assumed Vincent was just some guy with brawn that would want a "woman in uniform" stripper rather than realizing that it is not the UNIFORM that works for Vincent BUT the WOMAN and her MORALS and sense of Justice BEHIND the uniform that he loves! Vincent was only ever truly comfortable around his "family" that knew him best. As was Catherine.
And if there was ever any TRUE JUSTICE in this world, Kristin would get an EMMY for her work in this episode! Her range of emotions crosses every line in this one--angry, pent-up resentment, fear, an attempted lockdown of her emotions, her attempt at distancing and "faking it," her genuine love for Vincent that came across multiple times (particularly in that ending scene in the church), her almost breakdown at realizing her mother was making THAT TAPE literally as the last thing she did before going to die. I mean, KK looked as if she REALLY believed every second of that videotape AND was re-living the full PAIN and grief that seh had NOT allowed herself to feel since 2012 and discovering Vanessa's connection to Vincent. ALL THAT was just played out in her face, body language AND tone and inflection of her voice. I mean, it is one o'clock IN THE MORNING for me right now with WAY too much on my plate at the office, YET I just HAVE to take the time to give these people their prop and dues! Even knowing what was going to happen due to spoilers, I BALLED MY EYES OUT! Kristin was just THAT powerful!
So unfair that we actually have to WORRY about whether or not this show remains on the air when it can still turn out AMAZING WORK like this episode! You FEEL this one and love the characters SO much more, when I thought that wasn't even possible! PLEASE let the word get out about this one, as I feel the rest of the season will more in par with this. Sadly, you needed the back story of earlier episodes, but they lacked the POWER of one like this. REALLY HOPE all BATB fans tune in for this one, especially if the reviews end up being as positive as I hope and feel they SHOULD be!

(1) I particularly enjoyed the role of "Officer Darla", played to perfection by Helena-Alexis Seymour, who we remember last from her turn on Warehouse 13 as "Female Bodybuilder".
(2) Hey @dave I know you were glad to see the return of Heather. However, it was positively Shakespearian the way wisdom was put into the mouth of fools: "You need to do some forgetting and forgiving or else learn to fake it..." Too true.
(3) I always thought Cat's anger at her Mom was just displaced guilt over her death - which we see released when she views her Mom's video, taken just moments before the beginning of the Pilot. (Interesting to see Khaira Ledeyo again; never thought we'd get that)
(4) If you don't ride motorcycles, just so you know: It isn't possible to jump like that (over Cat's car) without a ramp. Get serious.
(5) I didn't hear "co-dependency" a single time but I did count 13 "proto-beasts". Sigh...

Anyway,........as much as I love Cat crying and remembering Vanessa.........I don't get it. I mean what did Cat really learn? Vanessa didn't really reveal anything that Cat didn't know. Vanessa was involved in something she thought was helping keeping her safe? Didn't Bob already tell Cat that? I think Cat made some peace with Vanessa because she knew at least her Mother loved her enough to make the video. Other than that, I honestly thought, after all this time, Vanessa might reveal something or someone. Something specific. I was disappointed in a way........it was anticlimactic to me. Oh and love me some Ted Whittall...........I want him to come back and do something to really help Vincent and Cat. I agree...she didn't really get any answers she hadn't already known. Maybe you're right, and hearing her mom actually say the words hit home for Cat. Regardless, that scene was amazingly well done by KK. I felt every ounce of her emotions. Bravo! I agree about Ted Whittall...such a shame we don't see more of him!

Here is the one huge plot hole that I just can't overlook. HOW did Bob Reynolds get that tape?! Thomas Chandler would have had to send it to him, and I know we don't know what their relationship was, but why would he do that, and not save it for Cat himself? Maybe not wanting Cat to ever know what her mother did? I dunno.

Finally, I'm so glad to see the old "softer" Catherine back. Let's face it, she's been pretty annoying these last few episodes (in my opinion anyway). This episode brought back the justice-seeking, yet not annoying Cat we love. I hope she sticks around...I've missed her!

Maybe not wanting Cat to ever know what her mother did? I dunno. I'm going with Vanessa mailing it to Bob on her way out to help Cat that night. Don't think she would want to keep that around the house if Thomas didn't really know what she was doing with Muirfield. Could have been explained if the script had included a note from Vanessa to Bob that accompanied the tape. Something like: "Bob, Give to Catherine if she finds you. Please do the right thing."

Does Daddy Reynolds have a jar of jelly on his table? Did Vincat bring it as a gift? Lol! Attachments:

As to the Bob Reynolds thing, the most likely theory is that Vanessa WOULD have contacted Bob, as afraid as she was of retaliation from Muirfield, particularly since Bob was working with Muirfield at the time through the FBI. She likely told him to shield/protect Cat. And that she had left the tape and things for Cat, should something happen to her.
Based on that box and the things it contained, Bob either 1) broke into the Chandler house and took things from it, including the tape, possibly at Vanessa's request if he didn't get to her in time or 2) Vanessa put it in the mail to Bob on the way out the door to help Catherine. The tape is clearly labeled to be given to Cat, and so Vanessa left it with SOMEONE she trusted to later provide it to Cat. Vanessa had obviously been communicating with Bob over the years, since he had so many pictures of Cat and Vanessa together that she must have sent him. Plus, Bob knew about events in Cat's life and was even there for college graduation, although unknown to Cat until "Reunion."
A third explanation also exists. Vanessa could have left instructions to Thomas to mail the tape and things to Bob if something happened to her so that Bob would use his contacts to protect Catherine. Thomas obviously knew about Bob, as all that would have been part of the adoption process for Catherine. And Thomas WAS coming to see Catherine about Bob before he was killed, so he might have been prepared to disclose EVERYTHING, including whatever Vanessa had sent or left with Bob for Catherine.
Even if Vanessa HAD left the tape for Thomas to give to Catherine immediately, Thomas might have opted to send it to Bob on the assumption that the LESS Cat knew about Muirfield, the better, as Cat would go seeking justice and just get herself killed (as she almost ended up doing in Season 1). So Thomas might have figured that if Bob ever made himself known or looked up Catherine, the tape could be given to Cat then.
