(1) In typical Catherine fashion, she keeps saying she is fine with the way things are now - but she's not. And she shouldn't be. But then she can't understand Vincent's self-loathing; that's not in her nature either.
(2) What's delightful (and painful) about the pool scene is that they've never before let themselves look at what they really, really want. It is painful because the world is aligned against them ever getting it. And even escaping that, could they ever take the risk of having children?
(3) CAT: Don't say 'fine'. That's what I say when I'm not fine.
(4) After this exchange: CAT: ... Vincent, you have to swear to me that you're not gonna take another pill. VINCENT: Okay. CAT: No, swear. VINCENT: I swear, okay?
He says this solemnly so it is kind of disappointing when he breaks this vow. I can understand the pressures on him but still - she made him look her in the eyes and solemnly swear. So I am disappointed in him.
(5) TYLER: "Just one minor detail. What you need from him... he won't survive." GABE: "Whatever it takes." Proving that Gabe was consciously evil - even in human-mode.

Bill the beast, thanks for all your wise words. Now, I may be totally off, but I saw this point differently: (4) After this exchange: CAT: ...
So I am disappointed in him.Vincent swore, because that is what Catherine wanted to hear, and he knew that she would not relent on this point; it was never what he wanted to do. Vincent feels that Catherine has made, and continues to make, countless sacrifices to be with him, to protect him, to share a life with him. This pill allows him to make a sacrifice for her, to give her what he believes she really wants, what they both want. His idea and her idea, at that moment, as to what is the lesser of two evils, are not one and the same. So he swears with words, but his eyes say something completely different; he is begging her to let him do something for her, for both of them, and he is willing to pay the price, just as he feels she pays a high price everyday to be with him....he is only asking for 12 more hours. So I do not feel disappointed in him; I feel the tragedy of their reality even more poignantly, and that is why the scene where he takes the second pill and then cuddles up to a sleeping Catherine, is perhaps the one that most moves me in the entire series.

I agree, @locaxbatb. That was his sacrifice for her. Brings me to tears every time I watch that scene.

Totally agree... Is that scene what makes this episode so special to me. As you, I feel it's one of the best of the entire series and Jay showed his actor skills there! oh man! his eyes, his whole body were a tragedy! such a struggle! and the music in the background made the scene simply PERFECT! The way he later hugs Catherine is.... speechless... kuddos to Jay, seriously, one of his best performances!!!

Hi folks 1/21 is definitely one of my favorite all the time i read all your comments and i agree that taking the pill was V's sacrificing for Cat , his way to finally do it for her like she always do for him (you know with what happened in S2 ? when Vincent didn't choose Cat and their love although he had his memory at this point ? when he simply replaced her with Tori in a few minutes like she is just a a casual relation in his life and could easily replaced by more suitable or convenient relationship ( and then he treated her like a jerk i faced all my doubts in his love for her by what he did in this ep ? i said to myself , no he was not with her just because she was available ? just because she offered her love and her life to him on a silver plate , not just because he had no other option . she was never his spare or his backup plan ? No he really loved her , she was his one true love and soulmate , he was welling to sacrificing his life to live just three years with her a normal happy life , to give her what they both want and dream with but never dare to say it load because they know it is impossible i loved , no i adore the scene when he took the pill and hugged her while she was a sleep , but there was one small line he said to her after they got attacked in her place and he didn't beast out CAT: "You didn't... It's been over 12 hours." VINCENT: "Yeah. I just wanted to go to the movies with you. his line made my hear melt , no it brook it into a smal parts he risked it all to just go with her to see a real movie like any other normal couple i can't imagine what is it looks like to don't be able to took the woman you love , the woman who sacrificed every think for you ? and you aren't even able to take her to the cinema ?! it must by very painful feeling (that is why he was ready to do it with any cost it would take

I love Tess's Twilight reference; it just helps lighten Cat's mood...I like how you can tell from the beginning that she is worried but not put off by the idea of being pregnant.
