Here are my much to wordy thoughts on this episode...now back to voting!
Heather is so cute singing away; I like the choice of the song "I will survive"...Somehow we always survive heart break, and one of the best ways to do that is hanging out with your girlfriends. Is the song one of their mom's favourite 80's power ballad? Who knows.
Although the idea is about going cold turkey, about hanging out with other people who are important to you, Catherine cannot help herself and all she does is talk about Vincent. I love the fact that, even though his words at the end of the previous episode really hurt her -"My choice isn't that clear"- and that she has seconded Tess' description of his as a n "ass" she lets her guard down and says that he is heroic, that he understands her better than anyone else, that she is still hanging on....only to follow up with a statement that it is finito....what is clear to everyone, is that it is so far from over, no matter how many times she tells herself that it is.
The horror movie, ice cream scene is priceless-it works in every movie/TV show-it's a classic that must be included with every break up.
Could the scene with Alex be any more awkward? I think not! Catherine's ager, disappointment and jealousy are so palpable under all the sugar coated "small talk" and by the end of the scene Alex too, is beginning to sense that V and C's relationship may go deeper than that of "handler/handled".
We all know what C does when she does not want to deal with her emotions-she exercises....V being there in jogging gear waiting for her to go by reminds us that he has been looking out for her all these years, protecting her, learning about her habits, wishing he could be part of her life....I could be wrong, but throughout this scene I have always felt that he wanted her to tell him not to go...but how could she...and even though she wants to come across as unaffected by his decision to share a "romantic weekend" with Alex, everything in her words and facial expressions say that she does not want him to go, that she is jealous....but V is so caught up in the irrational idea of having a "normal" life again that he misses all the cues...they both behave like children in this scene...we needed the line-"What are you, five/"-but since they were both being childish, neither could see it.
By the next morning, C is second guessing herself; she does not want to lose him, but she does not know how to hold on to him. The case of the week keeps her connected to both V and A, and, once again, it is C to the rescue. (JT, as always, the voice of reason.) In order to protect V's identity she breaks the law, showing how deep her feelings and concern for Vincent run. The pictures in Alex's closet serve to remind her that he had a life before her, that he loved someone else; the lingerie bag reaffirms that that person from his past is now firmly rooted in his present. When Tess calls and she says that she is moving on, it is so clear that she is so far away from actually moving on.
What can I say to Vincent? Wake up and smell the roses V!!! When he says "if we are going to move forward"...is it because subconsciously he is thinking of Catherine or is it because he knows that he has to tell A and he is not sure as to how she will react? (I'll see what you all had to say.)
It's funny that Tess says that A's boyfriend is probably an 'ass" too....yes, Tess, he is one and same "ass"!
Love, love, love the C and JT scene from beginning to end...."I was trying to take the highroad"..." how about taking the Long Island Expressway to....." too funny for words!!! (However, the whole Evan and his speech and JT having to stop him, gets lost for me in this episode.)
So based on the first cabin scene, it seems that V's concern is that A may have difficulty accepting his present condition and he just can't muster up the courage to tell her the truth. I feel for A in this scene; she has dared to dream that the plans that were interrupted more than 10 years ago may now become reality (she had just about put her life on pause for all that time and she has just pressed the play button again); she does not want to hear anything V might say that could destroy that dream. V too, is in a difficult position: his life had also been on pause until Catherine came into it; however, neither is sure that there is a future for them. The reintroduction of A into his life, ironically through C, gives him the opportunity to dream up an alternate reality, where he too, can just press the play button and continue where they left off, wether they still love each other or not. I do not believe that either has truly asked themselves that question. There is just one problem, V's has to decide what to do with his secret. If he tells her and she reacts badly, the alternate life goes down the drain....and I believe that he knows her well enough that he knows how she will react; hence, he chooses not to tell her convincing himself that he can live a normal life as a doctor somewhere in Central America and that A never needs to know his secret. My heart hurts for him; he so wants what he cannot have that he is actually delusional. We have a very smart man who is no longer able to reason and who is no longer truly in touch with his feelings.
C's short conversation with Tess as she is driving to the cabin lets us see how invested she still is in protecting V, but also points out that while Tess owns up to having plans with "mister married", C is keeping huge secrets from her best friend; this will all come to a head in Partners in Crime.
Another awkward scene, V and A having dinner...he tries to tell the truth once again...but can't quite spit it out, I feel that without him even being aware of it, his feelings for C are also in the mix. He wants to live the fantasy (leave your old, complicated life behind), but realizes that he will be losing people he cares deeply about. He wants to do the right thing, but he doesn't really know what the right thing is at the moment. The arrival of the mechanic sent by Murfield quickly brings him back to reality, reality. He is already starting to see that he cannot escape his actual life.
Next, JT tries to tell Evan that he is getting mixed up with a secret organization that is dangerous without revealing anything about V and it all back fires as Evan ends up accusing him of inventing things in order to derail him and steal his research. Poor deluded and way too naive Evan.
I would hate to be in C's shoes as she approaches the door of that cabin not knowing what may be going on inside. Talk about swallowing your pride. The intensity of the conversation is reinforced by the lighting, A's attire vs. C's attire, C's ability to take charge of the situation and spring into action, while all the time feeling betrayed by V and his choices. A is finally coming to realize that V's problems are much bigger than she could have ever imagined.
How amazing is V in the next scene?
That poor guy had no idea what he was getting himself into; it's understandable that he almost mess his pants..and V is so V; he does what he can to protect the guy from Murfield.
I did not know that JT had it in him...blackmail!!!!! Just kidding; it has always been clear that JT will do anything to keep V safe (and Evan too), even things that go completely against his true nature....(and we did not know, at this point, the depths of his feelings of guilt when it came to V's situation). I'm still so sad that Evan left the show and we did not get to see his backstory unfold. I feel it had much potential.
One of my favourite scenes...V and C behind the tree (I wish I could have written "kissing in a tree"-LOL). The line: "It's not a bad thing when someone knows the darkest parts of you". She is once again telling him that she cares about him, even though she knows all of him. I believe he really hears it at that moment. Unlike Catherine, I do not believe that V would have chosen A, if she had been fine with his truth.
I love the use of his night vision, I love how he keeps her safe, I love how they work together to keep each other alive, I love how he acknowledges that he is glad she was there, I love the way they are honest with each other.
I am yet to understand how on earth A got to the scene...was there another car we did not know about? Can she fly? And after they talked, did V give her the keys to the car so that she could get back to the cabin and then home? I missed that completely. We know he left in C's car. Just asking and expecting no answers.
The scene between C, V and A serves to emphasize that while C has always trusted that V would not hurt her ( I still cringe when I think about Kidnapped) and built her connection with him because he is the reason she is alive, A's fear leads her to draw the gun C had given her to protect herself and she admits that she could never be with him....now that was the prick that fully burst his fantasy bubble. I loved the way C removed herself and gave them time to talk, the way she touched him ever so lightly as she walked away, as if to say that she was there for him, although he had hurt her. By the end of the scene, V knows that he has blown it with C, that he has some grovelling to do if he wants to win her back.
The sister scene in Liar Liar was a lot like this one; they listen to each other, they are accepting of each other's choices, they are there for each other....and I like that C is the one who makes plans for the girls to go out karaoke singing.
JT, JT...you worry too much....find a Tums and relax, buddy. I love how JT stands up for C and how V calls himself an "ass"-V knows he is in trouble with V and is running to get to her place...I really like the JT/Evan conversation; they are both sorry for their tactics, actions and reactions..they have a real human moment...and now I understand JT's comment: "We all have skeletons"....I'd missed all that the first time around. There are so many times in Season 1 where JT makes reference to his deep sense of guilt towards V, but it all went right over my head.
Another moment that is paralleled in Liar Liar...this time she does not close the window in his face, but walks away the same way...(it was a little warmer in TO last winter-that could explain the whole window thing). This is another wonderful, deep, meaningful, honest moment for VinCat...(I have to say that I am still missing these kinds of interactions between them-I hope we get some in the last 6 episodes). He is remorseful-he knows he made a mistake when he told her that his choice was not so clear. As far as C is concerned, it is too little too late. She wants to make it clear that he will have o work hard to regain her trust and affection. Yet, she cannot remove herself completely from his life; she creates a reason for her to still be involved, if only in her role as a cop friend protecting him. His affirmation that he is not going anywhere almost falls on deaf ears.
I love how it ends the same way it begins...the girls are out on the town. However, it is totally different. C realizes that she has been neglecting Heather and Tess and that she has been all-consumed with V....this time she puts him aside and is able to truly enjoy her girlfriends company. Again, I love the song....Don't go breaking my heart.....The truth of the matter is that she has given V her heart.....we all know this is not the last time he will break it....
