There has been a lot of arguments on the episode thread about the last few episodes of Season 2 (specifically 2x05 and 2x07). A lot of valid points have already been raised so I don't want to get into that but it did make me take a step back and look at the overall picture. It doesn't matter so much if we don't like a specific episode or not as there are plenty of those and I don't think it is possible for one person to love all episodes equally. I just wanted to get some things off my chest that I have been feeling and to see if it makes sense. I watch a fair amount of shows on tv and most of those are decent, I'm not a fan of TVD but I do like Arrow and Supernatural among the CW shows. When I watched the first season of BATB it became a show that I didn't just like but loved which is why I joined this forum to begin with not that long ago (I wasn't part of the beasties for season 1 as I only got into the show last month).
I like the idea of a fairy tale and a love story which is not typical or in other words unrealistic. After all how can anyone love someone and remain faithful to them for better or worse, at least when they are apart. That wouldn't be living but then isn't that what a fairy tale is. Yes it would be extremely boring to have a love story where two people who love each other are together and can live out their lives where's the drama in that. My only concern is that why the drama has to be in the shape of a love triangle (or at least the possibility of one) wouldn't it be better to have those people apart due to circumstances and still have us feel their bond and connection as strong as ever. To me that's what elevates a love story and makes it memorable to me and that's pretty much what I got in the first season and the first few episodes. The last few have left a lot to be desired. That's not to say I won't watch the show or anything just that as for right now the show I used to love has become one I can watch and enjoy somewhat but not like I did the first season. Hopefully the remaining episodes in this season will capture some of the magic I felt in previous season.
Maybe it is because I have been spoiled a bit by at least one love story I know of that is about hardships and sacrifices over a long time but where the core of the feelings and emotions never changed. I'm referring to The Sword of Truth, a series of books by Terry Goodkind which revolves around the story of two people who are literally meant to be and not just for one season. It is a fantasy series so I'm sure unrealistic to a lot of people but just my personal favorite story and something I treasure. The first season of BATB touched me the same way as that series did and here is to hoping the rest of season 2 will do that again for me..in any case I have and always will treasure the first season...

Don't know what to say more than I fully agree with you. I still feel s1 as magic despite the plotholes, because the love story was wonderful and magic. This season things got really weird between VinCat but still don't want to believe htere will be a triangle. I think the main issue writers wanted to show with V is that his beast is controlling him, in ALL WAYS. Yeah, they needn't put into the picture Tori but I still and truly believe they will not go further... That's my opinion and might be wrong, but I want to give a chance to Sherri and Jennifer who ultimately created and wrote those wonderful scenes and stories from S1. As for those books you mention... I may take a look! I love epic love stories and fantasy series!  Lovely thread, btw! And specially and nicely surprised it was open by a guy!  |

And it was called Legend of the Seeker starring Bridget Regan (hello! Alex the redhead from batb S1) What a small world! Isn't it ironic?   |

Just another tidbit for you there was a show based on those books called Legend of the Seeker and the interesting fact about that was the lead female in that show was Bridget Regan (aka Alex Salter), so in a way my link to BATB started even before I watched it. That show lasted 2 seasons and while it wasn't able to quite capture the heart and soul of those books overall there were some episodes which did. |

You and me both, she is actually the reason I watched the show, not saying that in a bad way just that I watched some of her interviews promoting the show and she did a great job with that which got me hooked on the show and the books after that. Not saying I'm a fan of Alex but certainly of Bridget. |

For me that would be Arthur and Guinevere in the UK series Merlin. These two were separated by class and sorcery, but always loved each other and held true to that love. That's why I'm ArwenFan.  For me, the first season captured the magic and romance of the original series (something I was quite sure it would not be capable of doing) while giving us a couple who could be lovers in every sense of the word. The attractiveness of the leads plus their chemistry sold their love story and connection 100%. This season I find myself asking, "WTF are these people?" |

I did like the first season of Merlin although didn't really get into the later seasons. You are right that Arthur and Guinevere were true to their love and as I haven't seen all of Merlin I can't comment on that but for me the first season of BATB and the sword of truth books had one thing in common in terms of love story and that was truly selfless noble characters who shared the same values and found comfort in helping and saving others. |

I like this thread. Good conversation! I agree there are other ways to tell a good story without a triangle. Not sure why the BATB writers went the route they did. I like the drama, but it's definitely missing the "magic" of the first season.

As good as season 1 was it didn't have good ratings some people thought it was too cheesy others were upset that it wasn't true to the original show. Whatever the reason it just didn't have the audience of other CW shows. Something had to give and they took a new approach (well technically it's not a new approach but rather just bring elements from other commercially successful shows into BATB). I can only guess but it seems to me like they decided to address some of the complaints critics had with season 1. Let's make Vincent more of a beast and not so lovable, let's take the cheesy elements out and bring more realistic elements. Epic love is fantasy and if we want to attract more viewers we have to make the characters more realistic and flawed rather than heroes. I'm just thinking out loud but from what I have seen so far in season 2 that's the impression I get... |

I can feel your pain as I share it too along with probably quite a few other folks. Season 1 was and still is very special to me. I guess I'm just old fashioned in that I like to see the good in people. For me Vincent and Catherine are special not just because they loved each other but also because of the values they shared. They were in a pretty bad place the entire season but yet they still lived and thrived in each other's company enjoying the little things like spending time with each other on rooftops and fireplaces. Yet they weren't selfish as they would also go to great lengths to help and save other people. Vincent didn't save Catherine at the start because he loved her but it's just who he was as a person and Catherine didn't love Vincent just because he saved her but that act told her about the kind of person Vincent was someone who is noble and good despite having a beast side and someone worth having in your life for all time..that's my interpretation anyway |
