Hi guys,
I wanted to ask you all to comment on the concept of superheroes and this show. And of course, that means the character of Vincent. First off, my definition of a superhero is a regular hero who has somehow obtained extraordinary/special abilities. Not just a person with abilities, but a hero who has them. Superheroes are the good guys. Their extra powers enable them to right wrongs, stop the bad guys, keep the peace and meet out a type of vigilante justice where there is none in a way that normal people can't. Superheroes don't "accidentally" kill people, generally speaking. I mean, possibly in an attempt to save the world (the larger picture) a few incidental deaths may occur (as in a major attack on a city such as New York), but only then. And they don't usually have this dark side that keeps getting in the way of them actually being a hero.
Our beast is as dark as he is light. Is it really epic love when a girl falls for him and accepts even his dark side? Where are the writers/producers going with this? Why don't they have Vincent take out "actual" bad guys that the police and general populace are having a difficult time dealing with? Like, oops, that bad guy just bit the dust, mysteriously. Cool! The world is a safer place. But what has Vincent been doing? Hiding out for ten years, for starters. He DID save a few people, incidentally, as he roamed the streets, but for some reason no one ever really noticed. And for some reason, the writers have never really portrayed him as a true hero and I wonder why?
Do we or the people of New York look up to this beast/man like Roy looks up to Arrow? Like Jimmie looked up to Superman? Or is Vincent just an unfortunate victim trying to survive what's been done to him? Where is the hero in that? Sometimes he kills people. But he's hot, so we overlook that ?
In the old B&B show, Vincent was a hero to many in the underground. He took them in, protected them. When will our Vincent start being a hero to anyone other than Catherine?
Heroes do something really heroic. Either they sacrifice themselves (or attempt to), or deny themselves something they really want--all for the good of others. I'm thinking of Thor destroying the bridge to the other worlds in order to protect them, knowing it would cost him the ability to return to his "love." But besides super-humanly resisting mauling his girlfriend while they got "freaky," what has Vincent done for the good of others? He has sacrificed a lot, but was it by his own choice? No, by Muirfield's. Voluntarily taking that vaccine HIMSELF in order to save his friends would have been incredibly heroic because of what he'd be giving up--his only chance at a cure. Instead, he didn't choose that--Catherine chose it for him.
I hope the writers will give us a hero this season, not just a tortured hot guy. What do you think??? Am I way off base?
(P.S. I'm an EXTREMELY big fan of this show, you know--this is just a philosophical conversation I'd like to have.)
