Beauty And The Beast (2012)
I love fairytales. I always have. I grew up watching Disney movies so I love fairytales and the concept of happily ever after. Now last year, I had Beastly to sink my teeth into with regards to the trend of modernising fairytales. A lot of people hated it; but for me I kinda liked it. So when I first heard about a television series for Beauty And The Beast, I was thrilled and couldn’t wait till it was on air.
Now as I said in an earlier post on The New Normal, I usually give a television series 5 episodes of chances. This new version of Beauty And The Beast is currently 3 episodes in. If you didn’t know there was a 1987 CBS series also called Beauty And The Beast with the beauty played by Terminator lead actress Linda Hamilton and the beast played by Ron Perlman aka Hellboy in the Hellboy movies series. Sorry I digress.
Now we all know Beauty And The Beast is a love story. The Beast is mean and ugly with a kind soul somewhere deep down while the Beauty is, well, beautiful but also a not as fragile as you think kind of damsel-in-distress. With just 3 episodes to the series, the romance bit is still in the slow cooker, heating up but it ain’t ready yet. And why should it? With movies it’s all about cutting down time, with television series it’s a marathon.
I didn’t watch the original series, so I can’t say if the newer updated series is better or worse. As such, I am looking at the series in on its own in today's context. Instead of a beast that looks half man half beast, the new “beast” Vincent Keller looks pretty normal when he’s calm and composed which makes it easier to understand why the female protagonist could fall in love with a “beast” but takes away the central concept that love conquers all and that looks are just skin deep. But let’s look at it this way, in our modern and cynical times, would you actually believe that a beautiful woman can love a beastly looking half man half animal.
Go ahead. Scream at me for being cynical or unfair in saying that ugly people cannot be loved. But I’m not talking about ugly people here; I’m talking about a half human half animal hybrid. Most people don’t believe in unicorns, or fairies, or centaurs. Sure we watch it in the movies and can suspend our logical minds and believe the fantasy components, but if you want to make it real, like it could actually happen, the “beast” would need a serious makeover and update. So CW’s Vincent Keller is their new and improved believable beast. And it works. We are talking about realistic New York City crime cases so the audience must be able to believe that the beast could actually walk among us on our streets.
Now the “beauty”; Kristin Kreuk is pretty, can I buy the fact that she’s a tough New York City detective who kicks ass even though she’s drop dead gorgeous? Yeah I can. It helps that she is actually trained in karate; helps her fighting scenes look credible. Now I like that they made the “beauty” a tough cookie like Catherine Chandler. She fights back; she has a mind of her own, yet you see her soft and vulnerable side as well.
Chemistry is very important. You have to believe that sparks could fly between your two leads. The casting director would have done a good job if the audience believes the two romantic leads can fall in love with one another. He or she would have done a phenomenal job if the audience wants the reel lovers to become real lovers. At the moment, the two leads played by Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan, whom I think are doing a great job, have a pretty sizzling hot thing going on onscreen.
I am a sucker for romance so I examine every look, every action, and every line between two romantic leads to see if there’s a budding romance lurking behind those scenes. Well, they have it. Vincent Keller and Catherine Chandler nailed it in my opinion.
I also have a thing for procedural dramas especially crime related dramas. I mean I love CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: NY, Flashpoint, Bones, The Mentalist, NCIS: Los Angeles, Lie To Me and Hawaii Five-0. There’s something about solving crimes that gets me excited. I like to play guess the killer throughout the television hour. In regards to the crimes Catherine solves each week, I think they could put a little more effort into them but its decent enough I guess.
For a television series, besides great leads, you need to have a good supporting cast. It takes every cast member to make a series great. I can’t say I love ALL the supporting cast members. Currently of all the supporting cast members, my favourite male is TJ, Vincent’s roommate and friend. And my favourite female supporting cast member is, strangely enough, Catherine’s sister, not her partner. I think TJ has the best and funniest lines so far in the series and I think he’s got great comedic timing.
So far so good for the new series Beauty And The Beast methinks. I’d like to see more so hopefully it gets picked up for a full season. Currently, added scripts have been ordered for the show, so the jury’s still out about whether this series will stay for good or go.
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
Episode 1: As with any pilot, there’s a world to set and there are bound to be a lot of exposition and explanations. I think the pilot sets the tone of the series quite well and as mentioned earlier, I love the dynamics between the “beauty” and the “beast” and when you throw in a comedic buddy in the form of Austin Basis’s TJ Forbes I think it’s a series worth giving a shot. In fact, one of my favourite scenes between these three is near the end when JT thinks he’s managed to keep Vincent a secret when his buddy and roommate has already exposed himself to Catherine.
Catherine: Hi
Vincent: Hi
JT: Hi? H-Hi!? Did I miss something? Or…?
Vincent: JT you mind?
I love the dynamics of the relationship between these three.
Okay, there's something about this scene that really
reminds me of another television series (Moonlight)
My favourite lines: “If Catherine Chandler starts asking questions, alerting Muirfield that you’re alive, we’re both dead men. And I don’t mean on a piece of paper dead, I mean dead. Like dead, dead.” & “Sometimes things aren’t what they seem, you can’t tell who the real monsters are.”
Episode 2: A more interesting case in this episode but in this episode we are also introduced to more of Catherine’s family situation since her mother died. We also meet her sister Heather Chandler, acted by Nicole Anderson, who adds to a little more light heartedness and a little less darkness to the series. This episode we see Vincent and Catherine find a middle ground and get to know each other a little better. We also get a glimpse of Vincent’s past and how Catherine might be his saviour as well as the person to get him a whole lot of trouble.
The Beast reveals himself in daylight. Reminds me of Hulk.
A budding friendship?
Starting from scratch and getting to know each better.
My favourite lines: “You brought a cellphone here? Why not a flashing neon sign, Vincent Keller lives here!?”, “As much I keep saying ‘stay away’ I keep showing up too.”, “You’ve seen me when I don’t want anyone to see me and you still haven’t run.”, “Being a detective is all about drawing lines, but being human, I think maybe its about how and when to cross them, together.”
Episode 3: Okay, episode 3 shows more about the growing relationship between Vincent and Catherine. I like that she drags him into helping her on one of her cases and that she helps him remember who he was. The way she calms him down when he’s in beast-mode, it really is very sweet. They even have couple-like fights and conversations. They obviously care a lot about each other. And although they’re not actually together, together, or officially, they sure do act like it. Also, JT gets the funniest lines and dialogue.
Reminds me of Avatar's "I see you" and also in the storyline
between Grey Anatomy's Owen Hunt and Cristina Yang.
JT: Do you not have a job? What are you doing here?
Catherine: Okay I know its risky but it’s just I had no other way to reach him, I can’t go to the warehouse, he doesn’t have a phone, no email…
JT: Yeah, no Twitter either. You know why? He can’t have any followers. Everyone needs to believe he’s dead or he will be, for real.
Catherine: Okay it’s just that we said we’d be in touch and I haven’t heard from him in like a week so…
JT: What? He hasn’t called? You know they say that if you haven’t heard from him in 3 days, he’s just not that into you, I’d move on.
Catherine: JT I…
JT: Do you not understand what’s going on here? He’s a genetically engineered killing machine…
Catherine: That is why I’m here. You’re not the only one who worries about him okay. I hadn’t heard from him, I just wanna to make sure that he’s okay.
JT: He’s fine.
Catherine: Okay.
JT: Why are you still standing here? (Catherine grabs a pen and notepad from JT’s pocket)
Catherine: Can you just give this to him?
JT: How are you? You risk this for a ‘How are you?’ Just sign all of our death certificates, ‘How are you?’
JT: So you and Catherine have decided to keep in touch.
Vincent: Carefully.
JT: So now I’m a carrier pigeon passing notes like I’m back in high school. What?
Vincent: Apparently not tonight.
JT: She’s here? So carefully means not careful at all.
Vincent: JT come on.
Catherine: Hey.
Vincent: Hey.
Catherine: I got your note.
JT: What note? You already wrote her back?
There's something sweet, romantic and "old school" about writing notes.
Catherine: You know I think I’ve had unrealistic expectations that you can communicate or be in the outside world.Vincent: I wish I was Batman too.
Catherine: No I just wish you were a normal guy.
Vincent: Ouch.
Catherine: That was not what I meant.
Vincent: Without all the baggage.
Catherine: Okay what I am trying to say badly is that I get it. In order to be in contact with you it has to be on your terms. It’s just hard. But I’d like to make it work.
Vincent: Then maybe we need to revise the terms, just in case.
Catherine: You wanna help again. Okay here’s one. We can’t go by without one of us reaching out to say ‘I’m still alive’.
Vincent: Fine. But my place, you can’t go there, unless it is a dire emergency.
Catherine: How am I supposed to know what qualifies as a dire emergency?
Vincent: You call me and you ask. Don’t get too excited. It’s only good for 3 more days.
Catherine: Then what happens?
Vincent: Then we play that one by ear.
My favourite line: “I’m not Batman, I don’t watch over the citizens of New York.”
Episode 4: Hmm, I just realised that what I love most about this series is the relationship between Vincent and Catherine. And this episode, their relationship sort of hit a snag. Previously, Catherine would follow her instincts and no-questions-asked put her faith in Vincent. However, in episode 4, her faith is questioned and she has real doubts for the first time. Although it wasn't my favourite episode because their "relationship" didn't seem to be going so well, but I think it was necessary. We all doubt that our decisions or feelings about someone is wrong, that is natural, and I guess it has to happen sometime. I think this episode made Murifield more real than before, we are given more hints as to what Vincent has done, what Murifield's connection to Vincent is (as revealed in the cryptic line from Vincent "I'm ready to come back"), and the fact that Catherine's mum IS connected to Murifield. One thing though, I loved how Catherine and JT had to work together to "save" Vincent. I think that's one other relationship in the show worth exploring.
Poor guy - "The world can think the worst of me,
but it hurts the most when it's you who thinks that way."
Vincent: You're afraid of me. Last night I thought it was Muirfield, but it was me.
Catherine: Understand that I am a cop, I put people like you away.
Vincent: You're trying to decide if I belong in a cage.
It's so sweet that he tries to protect JT and Catherine by giving himself up.
Catherine: Anything?
JT: No it just rings. He left this.
Catherine: Proof I existed?
JT: Insurance. In case something happens to us I'm supposed to send it out to the world.
Catherine: I had their phone number.
JT: And you lost it?
Catherine: I left it in my apartment, he probably took it.
JT: Great! Now what do we do?
Catherine: I couldn't see the plates on the SUV, there was no address at the warehouse. My car! (Catherine digs through her bag and pulls out a tube of foundation)
JT: Make-up? Now? Really?
Catherine: I need chalk. There was another agent, he drove my car, he must have left prints. All we need to do is lift them, send them through the system, track his phone, and then we're there.
JT: He'll be dead by then.
Catherine: Do you have a better idea?
I love her kick ass stunts! Plus it's nice seeing JT & Catherine
working together to "rescue" Vincent. I had a kick out of seeing JT
wield a bat and go after one of the agents. I like that JT ain't no wimp.
JT: Seriously how long does it take to match a fingerprint?
Catherine: We just sent it in.
JT: Call the CSI guy again.
Catherine: CSU! CSI is a TV show.
JT: What the hell was he thinking? After everything we've been through, after everything we've done.
Catherine: You ever afraid of him?
JT: What?
Catherine: That he's going to hurt you.
JT: No. I've known him my whole life. I mean, it freaks me out when he's like that, but he'd never hurt me.
Catherine: How do you know?
JT: I just know. (Catherine's phone rings) We got him?
Catherine: Just a second. (Catherine types a number into the computer)
JT: I'm having a heart attack... I'm having a heart attack right now!
Catherine: Okay we got him, let's go.
JT: Still gonna have a heart attack.
Dating (sort of) the old fashioned way. I love it!
Vincent: Game ball.
Catherine: You were there?
Vincent: It was a nice home run.
Catherine: This isn't a typical situation. I'm used to things being black and white and this is just... it's grey. The things you've done...
Vincent: I hate myself for them...
Catherine: I know that, and I know that you can't control it, and that you have a good heart... but I'm gonna have questions.
Vincent: Look, for the first time in a long long while, I felt like new things are possible for me. But Catherine, the way that you looked at me in the park that night, everything came crashing back. The reality of what I am and what I have done. The idea that you and JT are paying the price for it, that you are collateral damage because of me. That is why I gave myself in.
Catherine: You know that first night we met, in the woods. I knew that you would never hurt me. That was my gut. I'm sticking with that.
Vincent: I wish this was easier.
Catherine: Yeah. I do too.
My favourite line: "CSU! CSI is a TV show."
The Eclectic Reviewer thinks… Beauty And The Beast deserves a chance to see the season play out, at least for 13 episodes. I’d love to see more of Vincent and Catherine’s growing attraction for each other and how JT handles it. As for the procedural stuff, well, keep working on it guys. Although I do admit it’s a tad hard to put equal focus on both the “beauty” and “beast” storyline with the Muirfield storyline, on top of her day job solving crimes. I think the acting is decent and the sizzling onscreen chemistry between Jay Ryan's Vincent and Kristin Kreuk's Catherine is what keeps me drawn to the show. Though, I'd say the breakout star is actually Austin Basis' JT Forbes.
