Why didn't he just say "Wrong bathroom door" or something??? I don't blame Heather for not trusting her if he said he was getting the pictures from her room...

I'll start off with impressions about "Tough Love"
---------------------------------------- 1) The title has a double (at least) meaning: Heather and Tess try an "intervention" on Catherine - that's the main "tough love". But also all the love relationships in the story are tough to deal with. First there is VinCat trying to achieve that first kiss and declare their love for each other. Cat and Heather almost lose each other. Darius has always been trying to prove he is not the "family jerk" to Joe. Then there is Vincent visiting the grave of his heroic brother and feeling somehow, through rage, he has betrayed his family.
---------------------------------------- 2) I like the way the episode is framed by VinCat on the rooftop, at the beginning and end. My favorite image of them.
---------------------------------------- 3) If I had a little brother that acted the way Heather does to her older sister - I would have punched him. Heather is really good at ambushing Catherine and she should know that's what she is doing. So I think there is more going on here. There is something I really don't like about Heather. I think Heather resents Catherine, for filling in for their Mother but also for being private about her love life. Heather wears her heart on her sleeve; she sees it as "betrayal" if Catherine doesn't share everything with her.
It felt really good to see Catherine get ANGRY with Heather here: CAT: "... I thought you were on my side." HEATHER: "I am." CAT: "It doesn't feel like it. One awkward double date, and you decide that he's a criminal. You show up at my workplace, you talk to my coworker, you interrogate me in my interrogation room..."
But then we really start to get to it when Heather says, "... I TALK to you. Because that's what normal siblings do, but you just... you don't know how to be normal, do you?" Really she doesn't want to feel like the "incompetent one" while Catherine gets to feel competent.
---------------------------------------- 4) So JT walks in as they are about to kiss and asks if he interrupted something. Vincent says "Oh, no, just a delivery order" Catherine smiles at that. I don't get it. Some lines cut out? Then later when Darius knocks, they say maybe the delivery guy forgot something? Something here about delivery guys? Don't get it.
---------------------------------------- 5) At the dinner party when Catherine questioned Darius a little bit ("I mean, nothing's free. You always have to give something back."), Heather didn't like it and leapt to his defense. Just shows you her grilling Vincent wasn't entirely innocent.
---------------------------------------- 6) Catherine is more amused at the whole "awkward" thing than Vincent is. He was only doing all this for her anyway. Now Heather is hoarding pictures of him that could get him killed. The ditzy little sister is not so cute anymore. However, it is way over the top that Vincent tried to get the pictures himself by entering Heather's bedroom. I guess you can write it off to extreme paranoia brought out by the awkward dinner.
---------------------------------------- 7) There are several times during the episode when it is incomprehensible that they don't kiss. When he says goodbye out in the hall after the dinner, no one else is there. You get the feeling he is trying to avoid that level of commitment as long as possible. But then finally Heather calls out "Is everything OK?", which is totally unforgivable on her part. She wants to feel like she is the older sister! Catherine should have put her in her place long before this.
---------------------------------------- 8) One of funnier Tess-lines: JOE: "My marriage doesn't feel right. Neither does an award for leadership or integrity." TESS: "You know, Clinton was one of my favorite presidents." JOE: "You are so not helping." TESS: "Oh, come on."
---------------------------------------- 9) When Evan comes to Catherine about the decision he is about to make, it is almost as if he hopes she will talk him out of it: EVAN: "I have a decision to make - an opportunity, actually - but it would come at a cost. And I'm trying to figure out if it'd be worth it." He suspects he will lose Catherine forever in the act of protecting her.
---------------------------------------- 10) When Heather said, "... Vincent Zalanski just cost you your roommate", I said, "Good!". She's the add-on roommate, she has silly little jobs so she probably can't split the rent and she is the main block to getting this romance going. Good riddance!
---------------------------------------- 11) This was a confusing exchange at the club: VINCENT: [Louder] "You're right, Catherine. We should break up." CAT: [Softly, serious] "I should have just stuck to the original plan. Never seen you before, never see you again."
This was a confusing thing to say but I think it referred back to Catherine's initial reaction to Heather's discovery - to tell her Vincent was "just some random guy". But that plan fell apart when Heather recognized him from the wedding so Catherine never could have claimed she never saw him before.
---------------------------------------- 12) The irony of the two sibling relationships here - Catherine and Heather vs. Joe and Darius - is that Heather instantly assumes Vincent is a bad guy. But we know Vincent is actually a sweet and heroic guy who ends up saving her life, while secretly Darius is a pretentious loser who would have killed her.
---------------------------------------- 13) The sad effect of Catherine's unwillingness to trust others with the truth is she has to lie to the people she loves EVAN: "... I am scared for you, Cat." CAT: "Trust me, Evan. You don't have to be."
You can only ask people to trust you for so long. Then they finally see you as untrustworthy. This ended in Evan's death.
---------------------------------------- 14) This is Vincent's "original sin" and the source of his (somewhat) earned guilt. VINCENT: "... That rage, it... it makes you do crazy things." JT: "Like enlist?"
He doesn't begin to get beyond this until this point in Season 2.
---------------------------------------- 15) Vincent stands at a headstone that reads "William Keller, 1971 - 2001, Husband, Son, Brother (FDNY) Who Sacrificed His Life To Save Others, September 11, 2001, Never Forget"
This is apparently one of his brothers; we learned in "Worth" that his father's name was Michael Keller.
---------------------------------------- 16) This is not only sweet and romantic: CAT: "Crazy stuff happens. And all I want to do is share it with you. Figure it out with you. My normal... it's - it's when I'm with you." (quiet laugh) "I love you. I don't need walls or doors."
Even more, this seems to me to be one of Catherine Chandler's finest moments. This is an example of what a friend of mine called being fully in touch with your deepest values. After all that has happened in this episode - she has lost Tess, she is about to lose Evan, she almost lost Heather - you wouldn't be surprised if Catherine drew back into her shell. But at this moment she takes the risk to tell him explicitly how she feels. This is why we love her.
---------------------------------------- 17) And despite being riddled with guilt and frightened of everything Vincent can finally admit, "I am so in love with you." This is why we love him.
