While I understand the potential for the argument about killing off a main character, I would say that would definitely kill the show. Why invest in a show about a couple if you are told one of the pair will be killed off? I feel I am downright emotionally involved in loving the core pairing of VinCat on BATB. So what would be the point for viewers like myself, particularly when a show has a Fairy Tale name, to watch something that DOESN'T have the Happily Ever After?
Granted, several shows have benefitted, ratings-wise, by killing off certain characters. Look at "The Good Wife," "Game of Thrones," and "Bones." However, "The Good Wife" is about Alicia's journey, and no one was ever promised a happy Will/Alicia ending. That said, I haven't wanted to see that show after Will's death because I DID watch for the Alicia/Will pairing. As to the other shows, there is not just one main couple that everyone tunes in for, and deaths are expected and basically part of the plot for "Game of Thrones."
As to the original "Beauty and the Beast" series: I originally saved all the articles, books, etc. about the show as I was a huge fan. Linda Hamilton got pregnant in real life towards the end of Season 2. This was back in the day prior to the Aaron Spelling court decision that gave rights to pregnant actresses. Back in those days, a pregnancy could result in an actress being fired despite a contract. In Linda Hamilton's case, though, she first tried to ask for a reduced filming schedule because she was required to be on set at the same time as Ron Perlman, which was 4:00 a.m. Every working day. She would film individual scenes while Ron spent 4 hours in the make-up chair to become Vincent. Linda's request was denied, she didn't really want to be working from 4 a.m. to 9 or 10 at night while pregnant, especially when her marriage broke up before the baby was even born. Thus, Linda was basically let out of her contract (fired-but was by mutual agreement). There are some great interviews from some of the writers/showrunners, particularly George R.R. Martin about how angry everyone was at the time at Linda because they KNEW the show would most likely get cancelled. The fans got even more irate. In one of the books on the original series, one of the writers talked about how the fans somehow got addresses AND phone numbers of writers and even vandalized one of the writers/showrunner's cars! And the show DID get cancelled thereafter. They tried to go on with a new female potential love-interest being introduced, but the fans were having none of it.
Since the show (both then and now) was/is supposed to be about a fairy tale romance between the main core pairing, how would anyone expect to retain an audience if the whole draw/purpose of the series becomes nonexistent? Showing how the main leads are threatened by outside sources challenges the love relationship BUT allows the audience to enjoy how the couple turns towards one another as a result. Can really amp up the romance, in my opinion. Shows featuring a main couple HAVE survived for several years on television (think "Mad About You") so it CAN be done. Particularly as alliances are formed, etc. However, many shows HAVE failed to find ways to keep the audience interested, ESPECIALLY if they change the show drastically from season to season (think "Dark Angel"--this is the original show about the genetically-altered soldier who tries to hide from the organization that created her. Season 2 was founded on a COMPLETELY different direction, which resulted in a major loss of viewers, particularly as the showrunners deliberately kept the main couple apart as a result of a genetically engineered virus.)
"Fringe" and "The Blacklist" are examples of how the showrunners found ingenious ways to constantly thwart a couple or pairing or challenge said main characters AND keep the audience interested. Both of these shows have elements that would TOTALLY work for BATB.

Amen to that ! may i just say you aren't alone here ! as someone once said ( everybody loves happy ending ) ! well maybe not exactly everybody but at least a lot of people do ! and i am one of those people who do and would be very devastated if BATB ends in a sad or a tragedy end ! even more i would feel as if they deceive me and steal 4 years of my life in vain ! Interesting. So if the producers of BatB had said that Catherine and Vincent were destined to love each other but maybe maybe weren't necessarily destined to end up together, would you not have started watching the show or would you only watch once the show was over and were told that it ended happily? The answer is yes ! because i don't waste my time on sad stories ! real life is full of sadness and tragedies ! so why i would torture myself by watching them on TV too ? it called Entertainment industry for a reason ! i know that may sound shallow ( which i don't completely deny btw) but i watch TV to relax and to entertain myself ! so i avoid tragedy as possible ! if i am on depression mode and want to watch sad tragedies i simply turn the TV on the news channels !

even though i am not surprised at all i am still disappointed this would have been perfect timing for promo makes me think we will get no promo again this year...what's the point.. I don't think we'll get any promotions this year either. Although I'm very happy for the cast and crew to get a break from the harsh winter weather, I was slightly bummed when Stu said that they were going to start filming S4 end of May. Because it means they most likely won't be able to attend Comic Con San Diego again... which makes me sad because I miss watching Jay and Kristin do interviews. I would love to see all four of them, with Nina and Austin on a panel! I imagine with a great interviewer, it would be so much fun! Does anyone know if the Mentalist did any promotions? I was thinking maybe since BATB is also bigger internationally, they won't bother promoting it in the US. Although I do think CW allowing Netflix to show BATB seems to be the best promotion we had since there's a lot of new people watching it. Here's to hoping it shows in the ratings this season!

Bravo no one could said it better dear i just would add that BATB fans ( the beasties ) are very special and different than any TV show fans or any TV couple's fans ! they invested a lot of time and energy in vincat love story that it would be very hard ( almost impossible ) to accept anything less than a happily ever after end for their fairy tale !

Heaven's to Betsy! Kill one of them off! What a horrifying idea. It ruined the first BATB and I know it would do the same for our beloved (and best) version. Again, not suggesting that they continue the show without one of them. I'm saying that at the very end, last episode in the entire series, one of them would die. If Catherine dies, Vincent could be so consumed with grief that he wouldn't be able to change back into his human form anymore and he would go to live in the tunnels or if Vincent dies, Catherine would be left alone with their baby and the last shot could be of the baby with its eyes glowing. Or how about they both die and then JT takes their slightly strange looking baby Vincent, jr, and goes to live in the tunnels. How depressing. There is NO WAY this story is going to have anything other than a happy ending. It's a modern day fairytale afterall. The only way anyone is dying is if in the final scene of the final season, Vincent dies on the operating table, only to come back to life, no longer a beast, thereby allowing him to be the 'prince' of the original story, leaving the beast behind as a mere memory.
I recently watched all four seasons of 'Prison Break' with Wentworth Miller, not knowing the ending. I actually loved it but when it came to the final scenes and I realised the main character died, leaving his wife and unborn son behind, I sobbed my heart out and went into a deep depression that lasted days. I even found myself watching the ending again, like some sort of madwoman, hoping I was mistaken and that it would change to a happy one. I could not cope if my beloved BATB had a similar ending. This has to have the 'happily ever after' as they deserve it after everything they have been through. And we deserve it too!!!

saw pippin comments and i think it should not have the "happy ending" only if they fake both their deaths like "burn notice" did. i dont see vincent becoming human at any time soon cuz in season 1 when cat rebooted his beast side it was told that it cant be cured. also if homeland security agents r coming into play i see they will be using vincent in all of national security problems and also supernatural pblms. they r not just gonna leave vincent alone. if we have that amt of uncertainty like "banshee" "game of thrones" "the walking dead" it will be good.(i still watch the show even if my fav char has been throat cut, neck snapped and shot in the head cuz i believe in storytelling and they do give awesome eps) . last night i saw catherine ashton pics and i believe we r gonna have an exciting story for JT(healing hands from the bullet wound). i think whatever they gave to jt is somehow connected to vin blood or dna. cuz he does had the healing power.

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that they'll be at the CW Upfronts in May. It seems the perfect way to kick off not only S3 but the CW's new push for more original scripted summer programming.

You would think so I just don't understand the lack of promotion for season 3 even though we're only in March and why none of the cast are goings to WonderCon it just doesn't make any sense to me it's like the CW doesn't want to attract more viwers and yet they have renewed it fir a season 4 which if course I'm thrilled about but the lack of promotion leaves me speechless.

Agreed. Altho I have a feeling we will only get interviews from Austin Basis, Brad Kern & Stu Gillard. Nothing from our leads if I had to guess. If I was CW & I recognized the chemistry between Jay & Kk I would be capitalizing on that and having them do interviews together a lot more. Honestly what is the last new interview we got of Jay & Kk together for promo for the show? And I don't remember what the last seperate interviews were either. I kno KK did a brief interview right before Love Letters and her Canadian reads things, and I think one interview for S3, but that's it I think. Nothing from Jay period, minimal from KK & Nina. Honestly the shows best promotion is the beasties.
