And I didn't want VinCat's first kiss to be in the middle of an angry argument about appropriate boundaries, but I admit that the Rain Scene was just so HOT HOT HOT and that the sexual tension was louder than the rain. And like the rain, it appeared never ending!! And they just looked like they needed to kiss then. LOL. Well, I definitely didnt want their 1st kiss to be like that, but like you said the sexual tension was louder than the rain. Either way I wouldnt have been surprised. Thats why within a few episodes I was just itching to see the kiss already. I dont think they couldve put it off any longer than they already did. With the chemistry those to have together, it just be unrealistic to me that they didnt kiss by when they did.

And even MUIRFIELD is quick to pick up on the fact that Vincent is clearly protective of Catherine and vice versa. So they just know that they can use Catherine to get to Vincent. And they can readily pick out Cat's weakness--her need for answers regarding her mother AND her need for justice and to protect the people. Muirfield will work both those angles in the next episode in order to try to turn Cat against Vincent.
This episode and the next really appear to be turning points for VinCat: they both realize FULLY what they are getting into by having a relationship with one another. The danger is defined not just by Muirfield but by Cat's cases and BOTH of their needs for justice.

I think they both know deep down already that they want more, they are just to unsure or afraid to admit it right now

And I love how much ALIKE the two of them are! They both share the same core values and beliefs and sense of justice. So the attraction is based on so much MORE than simple appearance. Both recognize the kindred spirit in the other. And it is SO obvious that they just don't WANT to stay away.
I LOVE how Vincent is JUST in the process of telling JT that he plans to stay in touch with Catherine at the exact moment she has come to seek him out. They just both end up being on the same wavelength so much of the episode, even when they are fighting! Each is so stubborn and determined to do EXACTLY what each plans to do, whether the other agrees with the action or not. But they both are quick to clear the air between them BECAUSE they SO want the relationship to work! LOVE THIS!

And I HAVE to add this final observation:
JT may have lived with Vincent for ten straight years, but he just doesn't get how much Vincent wants to feel NEEDED and necessary to the world. Catherine GETS this, right from the beginning. She KNOWS Vincent wants to help people, so she adds that little dig and that JUST right bit of nagging to get Vincent to do the right thing because she KNOWS that Vincent needs to do this. So Vincent and Catherine just invariably UNDERSTAND one another on a level that even their closest friends don't get. Their connection and pull is just automatically there, and they just continue building on it with each and every contact that they make with one another.
And I love how Catherine and Vincent can just SAY what is on their mind to one another without having to worry about censuring their thoughts. They CAN just yell it out when they need to. They can gripe with one another, and it will not be held against them.
JT and Tess just fail to understand their partners in this episode and WHY both Vincent and Catherine just HAVE to see the situation through to the end, even if it means trouble for one another. YET Vincent and Catherine never really fail to understand one another and anticipate the action of the other. And they just pick up on every little clue the other drops. It really doesn't take much for them to come together in a crisis and figure out how to help one another out, even if the help isn't wanted. Cat and Vincent can just be themselves around one another and trust that the other won't be frightened away by what they see.
Again, the above was why VinCat just appealed to me on so many levels. You just see WHY they love each other so much and how they accept the best and worst in one another.

They dont play the mind games or guessing games like you see so many other couples on TV do. They just say whats on their mind or what needs to be said whether the other one wants to hear it or not. They know that there will be no grudges and that once everything is settled that they both will be better off for speaking their mind. Its a very honest relationship that some of the most mature adults out there can even comprehend or have for themselves

I just love this episode, for all the reasons you all have said....That's why I always catch myself watching it all over again! This one, Worth and episode 1x09 are the proof that you can have an amazing episode without kiss, sex, etc.

I took the time to watch episodes 3 and 4 last Sunday, just to participate to this discussion... And one awful day at work, and for the life of me, I'm a mess and I can't remember what I wanted to say ;-(
Ok not in the right order, but never mind Of course, I loved the fire escape scene, very cute! very romantic, very "there's-gonna-be-much-more-between-these-two" I loved when he helped the little girl after Catherine had begged him...just maybe I found his hesitation at first, like he was too shy, a bit too much. I won't be saying negative things about Vincent very often, so yeah I'm doing it here, LOL. His bending face hesitant, yes a bit too much for me. I mean he was there, he knew why he was there, so even if it's not easy to deal with a frightened and foreign-languaged girl, and doing a job you have not done in a long time...well we knew he would do it and he knew he would do it. What else? the jogging scene with Catherine writing just "how are you" that really cracked me up! And no I did never expect that there'd be a first kiss in that rain scene, didn't cross my mind... Ok if I remember more I'll be back...

An okay episode that only gets as much replay time from me as it does because of the stellar Vincat moments. "Do you not have a job? What are you doing here?" JT's delivery of the this line along with his "put upon" sigh over Catherine's note never gets old, no matter how many times I watch this episode. Catherine took Heather's christening of her apartment a lot better than I would have. Also, that milk carton would have gone directly into the trash. Apparently, Josh didn't get home training. Catherine's dogged pursuit of the truth behind Judge Hanson's murder looked a lot like her dogged pursuit over the crime in the suburbs in "Ever After." The girl is consistent and driven when it comes to her work. I love a man with upper body strength. Yay, Vincent. I liked how Vincent let Catherine know that (even though she hadn't seen him) he was keeping an eye on her. Aw, he was worried about her, too, and her expression gave it away that she was flattered. I liked the casting of Dane and Iris, both actors did a good job in their roles. "I'm not Batman, remember?" Um, yes, Vincent, you are. This episode gave us our first glimpse of what Vincent was like before Muirfield. He was clearly a good doctor, warm and caring. He connected with Mila easily and gained her trust. I loved this scene not only for Vincent's interaction with Mila, but also for the way Catherine reacted to him. First the phone. She was shocked that he had a phone (and annoyed that there was a way they could keep in touch and he hadn't shared it with her), then she saw him in his element, doing the work he'd been trained for and she melted. I thought Catherine fell for him a little harder in that moment, her expression was an open book. Good stuff. Sexy? Heck, yeah, it was hot when Vincent pulled Catherine off the street. That little scene was only seconds long, but crackling with sexual tension. The argument in the rain raised the tension between Vincat even more; it was multi-layered, oozing with subtext, and I loved that. Calming the beast. Catherine is able to calm Vincent down and soothe the beast's rage with just the sound of her voice and the touch of her hand. He trusts her her completely, the bond between them grows stronger each time they're together and it's soooo romantic. I loved the ending scene. It's oddly chivalrous that Vincent leaves her notes, then waits outside her on the fire escape, clearly respecting her and her space. I liked that Catherine realized Vincent wasn't blowing her off, but that his situation calls for extreme caution for her protection as well as his. And I adored Vincent's decision to "revise the terms" so that he could give her the number she wanted, giving her the green light to reach out whenever she wanted. Slowly, but surely they're moving closer and defining their unique and powerful relationship. And finally, I got a giggle out of Cat's message to her father. Whether she knows it yet or not, she has given Vincent a prominent place in her life. Nope, she's not alone.

Arwenfan,
LOVE LOVE your comments on this one. And I was not going to say it before, but now I just HAVE to. When Vincent is treating Mila (or however you spell her name), doesn't Cat just LOOK like she wants him to be her future Baby Daddy in that moment? You literally see her just MELT, which of course, keeps her from being as angry as Cat usually would be about Vincent keeping the phone thing a secret. And Cat clearly loves that he is New York's own version of Batman, which makes her usually forgive Vincent for anything relatively quickly, after she has her initial moment, because she does appreciate all that he does.
And I definitely agree with your assessment of Cat's phone message to her father--she DOES know at this point that she is NOT alone (and that Vincent has no plans of ever leaving her alone again <g>)! And part of that is that BOTH of them are ending their own self-imposed isolations and moving towards one another, even this early on. And I LOVE how it softens them both up (in a good way) in this episode.

Copied these from the ratings thread In episode 103, Cat goes to Dane's nightclub wearing the clothes she was wearing at work, but an early script had this description: the rough seas seem to literally part for Cat -- who in a sleek dress, bad girl make-up, and blown out hair -- has transformed herself into the sexiest creature ever to stun the lower east side. She glides past the mob and the bouncer at the velvet rope -- no badge needed. pippin I've come to realise that KK is bit on the conservative side when it comes to her dressing and I respect her individual choice, no matter how I would love to see her in something sexier to go along with her obvious beauty. But gawdammit Pippin! That script line is making me imagine how it might have turned out..... You might also like to imagine another scene that was in the early draft of the script in which Vincent watches Cat as she is getting out of the shower and drying off. LOL Could have been an interesting scene especially because Cat caught Vincent and called him out on it. But I remember being glad at the time that they didn't have that scene in the episode since some critics and viewers were already jumping to conclusions and calling Vincent a stalker and accusing the show of romanticizing that behavior. Vincent on the look out for trouble, finally coming to a stop outside of
INT. CATHERINE'S APARTMENT
Catherine showers, scrubbing away the filth from her tackle. NEXT, toweling off, she hears something.
EXT. CATHERINE'S APARTMENT.
Vincent the voyeur catches a glimpse of Catherine through her bedroom window. When he loses sight of her, he moves to reposition himself
