Very interest read. How TV networks REALLY pick which pilots become seriesWhile we wait for the broadcast networks to choose which of their comedy and drama pilots will get a series order for next season, here’s a handy primer on how this decades-old hit-making process works…

Love this article. Very true and honest. Too Much TV"So the question is, what makes a Beastie? From what I’ve come to understand, Beasties are international – we come from all over the world and speak many languages. Beasties are passionate – we fought for season 2 and we won; we’re fighting harder for season 3, desperately hoping for a win this time too. Beasties are friendly – we have connected with other Beasties on Twitter and Facebook; people have met up in the real world (you know that place outside social media), people who have never and will never meet in real life have bonded over a television show. Beasties are intelligent – we have come up with new and innovative ways to show how much we love and are dedicated to this television (Rose Campaign, thanking advertisers, etc). Beasties are respectful – at least in my experience, I’ve not encountered a rude person in this fanbase. Beasties stay positive in the face of impossible odds – we keep going, we keep fighting, even though it seems like absolutely everyone (seriously the whole of the TV world) is against us. But does dedication mean that a Beastie should participate in every single trend? Vote in every single poll? Rate every single episode? Spend a lot of money on sending roses to Mark Pedowitz? It shouldn’t, at least not for me. I haven’t participated in every trend on Twitter. And I know that many others haven’t either. Should we be faulted for that? No. Here’s why… The real world still does exist. Because of time differences and school and jobs and children and spouses and so many other circumstances, each and every one of us can’t always be available. I also haven’t voted in very many polls. I voted quite a lot for the Save One Show poll, mainly because that one does get some recognition. I’ve largely avoided the rest of the polls. For the most part, it’s because I don’t have time. And the polls are essentially just for fun anyway. I don’t think The CW cares how many polls we win – even though it’s fun to win, for sure. As far as the Rose Campaign goes, I loved that idea. And I did send a lot of rose related items – mostly just cards or pictures (always with the message to KeepBatBelieving)." You can read the full article here: shannon101785.wordpress.com/

Even if it was an April Fool's posting, I liked the idea of BatB on Netflix. Getting picked up by Netflix could get the show some new press, Netflix itself would probably spend some $$ advertising the fact that the acquired the show, away from the stigma attached with being on the CW, the show might have gained new viewers who wouldn't ever consider watching anything on the CW, and free from network constraints, the show could even be a little more "adult." Think at this point it is sort of the chicken and egg thing. Promotion costs money. The CW already doesn't cover its programming costs through ad revenue since it's ratings are so low and Beauty's ad rates dropped from some $40,000 per 30 second spot for season 1 to $20,000 in season 2 -- reportedly lowest of all the programs on the broadcast networks. Supposedly most broadcast 1 hour long dramas cost $3 million per episode and are licensed for about $1.5 million per episode. But if the CW is more like cable, then the production budget for an hour long show could be @$2 million per episode and licensing fee about $1 million. So in season 1, maybe the ad dollars they get for Beauty is enough to cover the initial marketing (however flawed) for the show with the billboards in LA and New York, radio and magazine ads etc., the per episode license fee, the producer's previews, and the promos. Then at the upfronts in May 2013, CW unveils its fall schedule to the advertisers who have all of the data from the Nielsen's showing the age, race, income level, etc. of the people watching the show and all the advertisers are willing to pay for an ad during the show is $20,000. So in Season 1, maybe the CW had $1 - $1.2 million in ad $$ for Beauty but in season 2 they only get $500,000 - $600,000 per episode and thus no $$ for promotion. Then to make matters worse, the show premieres to a .3 and under a million viewers. Now the CW's streaming deal with Netflix can make up for some of the loss in ad revenue, but the question is how much is Netflix paying for each episode of Beauty? Reportedly the amount can range from $100,000 - $700,000 but that is determined by the length of a show's run and its popularity. In terms of CBS Studios, we know from the transcript of CBS 2012 3rd quarter report to its investors that season 1 of Beauty sold internationally for more than $1.5 million per episode. In November, EW had the article about Beauty continuing to do better abroad than in the US, but I haven't been able to find any $ figures with regards to season 2 international sales. We know some countries like Australia aren't carrying season 2 so I guess it would be less than $1.5. Some international networks like Watch in the UK reportedly had a three deal for the show, but TVWise said that it was for the right of first refusal. If the ratings for season 2 aren't satisfactory, they don't have to buy the other seasons. I assume whatever episode order amount we may get - whether it's only 6 or a full season -- it will be the maximum amount the Studio determined would make the show financially worth continuing. That was really informative, thanks a lot But there are some small things they could have done, but didn't. Like adding #BatB while the show was on (I saw many US Beasties complaining about this) , more promos & sneak peeks, producers' preview etc. These videos are up on The CW YouTube channel, so I guess they don't cost much? I really don't know much about advertising and marketing, but I think this show has been neglected by the networks, or I don't know, whoever responsible for the PR. Even on The CW's official Twitter account, you find much more tweets about other shows (not just TVD & SPN, even HOD and other shows with low ratings) than BatB. But again, thanks for the info I agree about the lack of promotion, but advertising and marketing cost money. Even if things seem small, unless we know the cost and time involved, it's hard to judge. Sure the producer's previews can be distributed through the CW's Youtube channel, but someone still has to take the time to film them and edit them. Obviously each season, the CW puts its limited marketing and advertising $$ into its few legit "hit" shows and the freshman shows they hope or decide will be their next hit. Maybe one of the things factoring in BatB renewal is the fact that the Studio and the Network don't have to spend their staff's time organizing trending parties on the behalf of Beauty like they do for some of their other shows. One of the things I question is why they didn't book KK and JR on The Talk which is owned by CBS Studios. I can understand why other national talk shows might not be interested in booking them given the ratings, but I would think CBS Studios could insist they get booked on The Talk. Sure maybe the demo for The Talk skews older and the CW's target demo is 18-34 while The Talk's is 25-54 but still they could pick up some eyeballs who might convince their younger siblings or children within the target demo to check out the show.

Hopefully Watch would buy a season 3. I think season 2 ratings are down.
