Okay, the tweets we have gotten make me Overjoyed for this ep. However, the title fills me with disquiet and foreboding (due to my inexplicable fear and distrust of the writers unfortunately incurred over the course of this season. Granted, it is due to my Post Traumatic Episode Season 2 Stress Disorder diagnosis that is caused by repeated blows to Vincat. I'm told the cure is repeated calming doses of multiple Vincat couplings that should hopefully be occurring by this episode, if said tweets are correct. Until then, I am taking steady doses of Any Means Possible and Insatiable daily until said time as that begins occurring again on my screen this season).
My Speculative reasons for the foreboding [first, of course, the recap to explain why I have come to my conclusions]:
Might as well deal with the whole Gabe arc this season now. Gabe last season was portrayed as a man willing to do anything, even sell out the woman he was with (Tyler? can't remember exact name) to get rid of the Beast Within. Once Beast is cured and dormant again , Gabe desperately tries to make things up to Cat. He really is trying to help her find Vincent. However, as Tess and others point out, Gabe is trying to repress his own feelings for Cat. Once Vincat seemingly fall apart for good, Gabe starts full-out indulging his hopes and putting the moves on Cat [yes, of course, insert Vomit, pitchforks, everything else here. I'm an unrepentant diehard VinCat fan always, even when suffering from the bleeding that is my tv screen at times this season].
Gabe really does seem to show some character growth in trying to bring Vincent into the team and get him to work for Cat. He even points out to Cat that Vincent asked about her being in the precinct as one of the hostages and immediately enters the building after her. Gabe encourages Cat to work with Vincent and tells Vincent to give Cat the gem. However, you see Gabe's confidence in this moment that he will get Cat in the episode, as he tells Vincent, "actually, she's waiting for me" (which wipes the smirk off Vincent's face--I felt Jay Ryan really portrayed a smidgen of shock then regret in his looks right there in that scene before immediately tampering down and returning to denial-mode).
However, once Cat and Vincent start working together, we really get a good look at the way Gabe operates in the Redemption episode. First off, I'm not saying Gabe is evil. Gabe is a previously rich, spoiled sort of kid who's adoptive parents seemed to have overcompensated for the things that had happened to him earlier in life (the injections, etc.). Gabe, like Tori, want to dominate and control their situation, especially since they lacked Control for so much of their lives. Gabe can see that it is natural for Vincent to go to Cat and with her to scenes (like the hospital) and other places to protect her. However, the ease with which the two work together quickly gets to Gabe. He goes from encouraging the Friendship and appearance of reasonableness and trust in Catherine to giving an ultimatum that she must choose between the two.
The Ultimatum to Cat is rather thoughtless if you think in terms of Cat's safety. I mean, we now know that Sam has a means to Activate anyone with the serum AND has a means to control them completely (by the by, HOW is this possible--there is not Gem involved. Even Reynolds couldn't control Vincent absolutely once Cat was back in his life). So sending Cat into any place with Sam is obviously problematic now. Gabe also refuses to sit on the sidelines like he is supposed to, basically hangs up on Cat, and goes tearing in the scene, forcing Vincent and Cat to have to go rescue him. Thoughtlessness on top of thoughtlessness. It exposes Cat and leads to her having to kill rather than save Poor Beast Jacob.
I get that Gabe can't ignore the obvious Vincat pull. With Vincent returning more towards his caring self, he becomes more the man that Cat fell in love with, the ultimate threat to Gabe. Gabe clearly also seems to think that Cat being in a relationship with him will make her choose him.
Therefore, the question becomes, once Cat does make a choice, what will Gabe do? Gabe ultimately tries to Control the situation by taking charge (like he did in the original search for Vincent, ousting Joe, taking over at the precinct, etc.). The REAL Test of Character is not how a character acts on a day when there are no problems facing him or her. Gabe has shown in Season 1 that when tested, he made the Wrong, Selfish choices of what he wanted over what others wanted.
Now, on to the Speculation. If he thought it was the only way to keep Cat, would Gabe willingly take the Beast Injection? He can see that Vincent can control the Beast side of himself, unlike in the first season when Gabe or Vincent could get triggered with little effort (and Gabe could not come down until injected). I interpret "Beast is the New Black" as meaning the serum has now somehow become available on the open market to certain interested parties, meaning that more Beasts are on the horizon. And, given a choice, would Gabe take the injection if it meant he could compete for Cat, in his own mind. If the Government now also has the serum, multiple future arcs are introduced. Is Gabe, when tested, the kind of guy that will let Cat go be with the man she really loves, or will he go all Lex Luthor and figure that he will take Cat, whether she wants to go or not.
Other Speculation: If Beast-mode is now trending, what does that mean for Vincent, who is trying NOT to be Beast? Does Cat push Vincent to beast-out more than he is comfortable doing? Is this going to become an issue, him having to be Beast too much? Also, does this mean possible Public awareness of beasts? Plus, we all know that the writers worry that if they get Vincent and Catherine together, the show somehow becomes boring to the viewers. Thus, I expect the Writers to throw some wrench into the works to keep the two apart that is not of Catherine and Vincent's making. The two still haven't had the moment where they confess their fears to one another --I'm expecting that Communication issue to be dealt with in 215.
I'm also disquieted by the fact that Catherine is going to be forced to do something she does not want to in 218 to save Vincent. Will Vincent know that she is doing this for him, or will her decision (made without his knowledge or consent even though done out of love) cause some type of separation between the two (rather forced by say government or corporate intervention, as I suspect)?
ACK!!! I need more spoilers! I will never make it to May! Where's that Roguecam guy? I need pictures! I need sustenance, fuel for my rampant speculation!
