I've been rewatching bits and pieces of S1. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment because it included the Alex arc. I get so frustrated with Vincent during the scene at the end of Seeing Red where he comes to her patio door. When he says, "it doesn't mean this isn't real" and "is this your way of dodging you and me?" Are you kidding me?! Reassure her, explain to her what you are thinking, do something other than blame her for the standstill in your relationship. It takes two, buddy.

I have no problems with the Alex arc anymore - after seeing Tori and Vincent in S2, Alex is just a very small bump in the road - but I totally agree with you on the dialogue being horrible and I felt so bad for Catherine that I could have just reached into my tv and smacked some sense into Vincent. I also really felt terrible for Catherine at the end of 'On Thin Ice' when she really opens up to Vincent and tells him that she wants to be with him and he shoots her down by telling her that Alex is ready to go away with him and that he feels 'normal' around her and not around Catherine. LOVED her response about him not having told Alex the truth about himself yet and that he was living in lala-land and just dreaming a totally unrealistic dream. Of course, then came 'Cold Turkey' and that is one of my favorite episodes of S1 where Catherine finally tells him a few truths: 'it is not a bad thing when somebody knows the darkest parts of you!' and Vincent finally comes out of this 'haze' and realizes what he had done. Although his somewhat lame explanation in the end about it never being about Alex but about a better future for himself was IMHO pretty bad and his claim that his feelings for Catherine had never gone away even while he was with Alex was even worse. It would mean that he was okay with making 3 people unhappy: Catherine for losing him, Alex in the long run once she realized that he was pining for Catherine and himself for being with the wrong woman. And his explanation in 'Trust No One' that he just wanted to make things right with Alex because he left her without an explanation so many years ago is even worse. S1 was not without its problems, plot holes and dialogue desasters, BUT is was also so full of wonderous, magical moments that it totally offset the glitches and made me forgive all that once 'Tough Love' and the roof top kiss came around.

I agree completely bbatb. I wanted to smack him on the head for his selfishness throughout the arc. Unless I'm remembering wrong, it seems odd that JT and Alex never had a scene together. They grew up together, too.

I think when a short arc for a guest star is written then one or two writter should do it. For BATB the writting inconsistancy was the biggest problem. One writter write one thing and the others don't followed it. The show had some of the most stupid writters on tv. Alex arc was a mess because of this. V said one thing in one episode and other thing in another. The only reason they got away with it because of 114 and 115.

I have always maintained that some writers 'painted themselves into a corner and the next crew had problems getting out of it. This became even worse in S3 and S4 with the new crop of writers seemingly not even having seen the previous episodes leave alone the previous seasons.

God knows why BATB writers never bothered to know what happened before the episode they were writing.
