I also felt Vincent was seemingly holding on to Tori if he couldn't have Cat. I felt that was the purpose of his conversation with Cat at the Guild. He REALLY wanted to know if he and Cat could be just friends or MORE than friends. But he DIDN'T say it that way, and Cat didn't hear it that way. So Vincent's conversation with Tori on the phone thereafter seemed almost like Vincent was "resigned" to staying with Tori and trying to make things work with her rather than go it alone. AGAIN like the Alex arc. And I REALLY didn't like what that said about Vincent, PARTICULARLY as his quote to Catherine on the fire escape in "Cold Turkey" is reflective of that same attitude.
"Cold Turkey" really seemed like the writers' attempt to explain the whole Alex arc. Alex was Vincent's "safety net" in that he COULD remain in control around her because she REALLY didn't do anything for him. Cat was the one who REALLY made his heart beat, but that also meant that he felt TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL with Cat while with Alex and Tori, Vincent was NEVER in any danger of losing himself to the relationship OR to passion or unsettled feelings. It was just a dull routine of NOT being alone with the red heads.
BUT that attitude of Vincent in not wanting to rock the boat or FIGHT for the REAL relationship with Cat CERTAINLY made me think less of Vincent during both of these arcs (AND to almost think that he never deserved Cat back at all). Vincent and Cat's conversation in the woods SHOWS that Vincent was actually holding an almost grudge against Cat at that point, blaming her for not moving forward with him because he was a beast. And as Cat points out to him, it is HIS PROBLEM, as she wanted to be with him for ALL of him. And Vincent particularly was careful to keep Alex from knowing the "real" him.
But Alex bothered me as well. She could see that Vincent was still a good man AND that he never appeared to hurt anybody that didn't hurt him or someone else. YET she is SO QUICK to overthrow Vincent JUST because he is a beast. She was willing to throw away her settled life in NY for someone she hadn't seen in a decade, yet she is done with him AND encouraging Catherine to take him off her hands SOLELY because of the beast thing. Had there been a "cure," she just would have been all over Vincent again despite what had happened. AND YET VINCENT CHOSE HER??? Just WOW. I was SO disgusted with his ploy.
Plus, I never liked that the exes had to die once they couldn't have Vincent or Cat. Come on, Evan could have remained in BATB-land and become Cat's version of JT. I guess the writers figured that Tess was meant to serve that role, Evan added a dimension AND could have been an interesting person for VINCENT to get to know, ESPECIALLY given that both were doctors. (Now Gabe, I'm fine with their killing him. RELISHED his death. But still.)
I would have liked Vincent rejecting Tori outright, yet Cat still trying to integrate Tori into the group BECAUSE she related to being in the SAME situation as Tori---parents who did outrageous and evil things and the BURDEN left to their offspring from the wreck and carnage left in the wake. Tori could have even vacilitated into becoming an EVIL person that took up her father's mob connections after deciding that she wants REVENGE on Cat for taking what she sees should be hers. Even though Cat would have been the person trying to save her. Tori could then have been quietly re-starting Muirfield behind the scenes, and Season 4 would have been the remnants of Tori's legacy after she finally DOES get killed, having turned. WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT for the further implications that beasts inevitably seem to gravitate towards the insane. Would have made Vincent feel GUILTY once again for being the CAUSE of a threat to Cat AND her career, as protecting Tori would also get Cat in potential trouble.
So Tori could have really served a purpose. I get that the "misunderstandings" caused by Vincent's seeming grief over Tori's dead body was the catalyst for the writers to push Cat forward into the arms of someone else and keep VinCat apart even longer. BUT Kern sadly underestimated Beasties' reactions to this threadbare and obvious plotline.
Just felt that Gabe, Evan and Tori could have served SO many other purposes and been interesting to watch. SOMETHING just seems to happen when you put that old combination back into play (meaning EVAN) as seen in 405's "It's A Wonderful Beast." Had Season 4 been a whole 22 episode season, I would have LOVED for Vincent to have been in a medically-induced coma so that the "alternate" dream universe could have played out for a 5 episode arc. I think Beasties would have really loved this. But with so few episodes for the final season, it just left little to no room to be creative beyond one episode.
