The most dangerous beast review
Episode 5 was fun – the 40 minutes went by real fast and it had some great moments. Of course, as with other season 3 episodes I was not fully wowed overall, but I did really like it.
So let’s get cracking with the highlights and the lowlights
Vincat first coffee scene – Cat is still on a mission (what’s new). Oh no – Vincent approaching with a big cup of coffee!! Vincent, please don’t give her any more coffee. She’s been a bit like this this season
We need to calm her down!!
It would actually help if the writers gave her a bit less dialogue. “After two years of defining ourselves by what those things are, it is hard to break the habit” … hmmm….yeah, this is the type of script/dialogue that I find a tad bit sterile…but let’s move on to a better line
Cat: “I am doing it again, arent’I”
Vincent: “Yes you are, but you caught yourself, that’s awesome”
So they are going their separate ways today – and they can only call themselves at certain times??
Cat running to catch carol and nearly getting run over by a car…To be fair I can see why she is paranoid … superhuman assassins are after them after all…
Another “relationship” dialogue where they psychoanalyse themselves “scientifically”. See this is what I really don’t like about their dialogues this season…when they do this (and they do not do this all the time but quite often) it feels contrived, fake, not genuine. Less is more sometimes, it really is! Please writers!
Good transition to the Tess/Cat precinct scene. I like Tess right now (not that I ever disliked her) – she knows that Cat’s focus on the experiments is giving her tunnel vision and she is trying to find ways to divert her focus to other things. Ok, she is also selfishly thinking about herself and her captain positon, but come on she is human, she does need to think about herself sometimes . So here comes the new partner – poor guy lol, quite a first day at work – I bet he is not coming back for seconds. We won’t really see him again, will we? . (Side note: I really do like how ethnically diverse this show is compared to other shows out there).
Tess asks Cat to not bother J.T. – poor guy is trying to figure out what’s wrong with him. And what does Cat do? She calls J.T….not to find out if he is well, but because she needs intel on Bob and Carol…yes, J.T. , well said - like a dog with a bone
This quality of cat this season is causing issues for the people around her – J.T. is clearly annoyed somewhat, it will impair her relationship with Vincent, with Tess and will be her (at least temporary) downfall… I know she has always been like that but it is so much more exaggerated this season, it appears that she does not even care, whereas before she did try to control it.
J.T. goes through the superpower details. Question, am I imagining things- did we not already know what their superpower is and how it works?? Also, why does J.T. need to tell Cat that they need to see so that their super power works – hint, hint for what’s coming up later but did we really need this piece of info right now? It was a bit of a giveaway.
J.T. and Vincent – Cat’s love is always with Vincent, he can de-primalise (yeah I know this is not a word) himself without Cat being physically there, says J.T. (hint, hint…20 minutes later…)
The robbed guy scene was really funny
Cat: ask him if there is anything he needs first
Partner: Is there anything we can do for you first?
Robbed dude: WHAT? FIRST?? The first thing you can do is catch the son of a b…h that did this to me
Cat sees Carol – Cat has a great instinct, I have to give her that… her senses are probably more heightened than Vincent’s lol
Vincent on his way to the woods – chat with cat on the phone (the word co-dependency has been used three times so far this episode btw). Tess/carol, carol/Tess who cares at this stage Vincent – u are about to be tranqued by a super human assassin!! Cell reception gone – Vincent really needs to change his mobile provider. Neither Bob nor J.T. had any reception problems in the woods… seriously writers…
Oh no… cat is having coffee again!Bob and Carol explaining to us, the audience, why they are after vincent – I wonder who the big boss is… I guess we’ll find out soon, episode 8 maybe?
Crime scene – Cat figures out Carol is the culprit…oopsie…
Cool scene in the woods, Bob checking Vincent’s morality levels, that’s pretty intriguing…why is Vincent so very special compared to other beasts and what do they need him for?
Cat trying to convince Tess that Carol is after her again – the story “the boy who cried wolf” springs to mind. Then again, Cat is quite often right, as will be proven soon enough.
Tess: “It’s an order, detective”
Cat: “ai, ai captain”
Cat and partner chat – cat: “addresses, meth labs, GO”
lol, I can totally get that cat is stressed, but poor guy must be reaching boiling point at this stage
In the woods – Vincent could be the one. now, that’s quite interesting. I really hope the baddie plot starts moving forward now cause we really need it to do so! That along with higher danger stakes for vincat, please- It seems like they are totally invincible now and they know it.
J.T. has more powers – first thing I thought, surely that won’t last long…fast forward 15 minutes later – powers gone. Parenthesis… what purpose did the J.T. superpower storyline serve other than for J.T. to “stop” Bob in the woods? Hmm… I am not sure we needed that storyline in the first place…not that I particularly mind it.
Next scene – poor partner who by now needs therapy is shot. Cool Cat/Carol scene, fun fight. Kick her ass, Cat!
I love the next scene of Vincent and Bob – “I swear, if anything happens to Catherine…” and the mini action scene that followed was ace!! Plus , the return of the tranq gun!! Dun, dun, dun!!
J.T. calls Tess – he loves her….nice – but why oh why could we not get a Vincat scene like this?? Oh why??? I mean, in all honesty I do not care that much about J.T. and Tess.
Carol in custody – omg I so hated her co-dependency speech. I cannot believe the co-dependency theme is being used to justify bob and carol’s tactics. For the record, the word co-dependency was used 5 times in 305. On a positive note, the plot is moving somewhat forward. We know there is a baddie and carol is afraid of him/her.
Tess barges in after hearing the message – ok, I did not find that scene believable … it was a bit much i felt….cat is the voice of reason now and impressively calm. The reason she was stressed out like 20 minutes ago was because she could not trust Vincent alone in case he went primal…I assume she has now got over that issue she’s had since the beginning of the season, and it will never be mentioned again, right??
Another fav scene – Vincent chained. J.T. to the rescue! He is such a great friend. J.T. deserves the best. Another question – what did Bob think when he just simply chained Vincent to the back of his truck? I mean, yes he trunked Vincent but surely he knew Vincent would wake up. Does Vincent even need to go primal to break free from those chains? Lamest superhuman assassin ever! So Vincent goes primal and breaks free, kills Bob and manages to “de-primalise” himself on his own. Those flashbacks from season 1 gave me so many feels – like, so many! And yes, I do realise they were falling in love back then, needs to be more natural now and I do love their interactions but I feel there is so much they could do script wise and plot wise to produce great swoon worthy moments of a different type and take better advantage of that great chemistry.
Tess admits Cat was right (which she was) and is relieved that J.T. is well too.
I loved the scene when Carol realises Bob is gone - I couldnt care less about Carol, but I couldn't help thinking about vincat's love when I saw her so devastated at his death and her decision to stop her heart...awww....
A cute J.T.-Tess scene follows – can the writers please realise that we don’t need that much focus on J.T. and Tess? We do not need to see them as a couple so much in each episode. We don’t need a J.T-Tess ending along with a Vincat ending – and we definitely need a longer Vincat ending than we are getting every time….I don’t know how others feel but J.T and Tess as a couple do NOT do it for me at all – they don’t bother me either, but they do bother me if there is such a focus on their coupling.
Final Scene – swoooonnnn
Loved the vincat interaction! Love how naturally comfortable they are with each other. I can totally feel the love and desire in this scene. The way Vincent looks at her, her slight insecurity by asking that question, his answer which delivered by Jay felt so beautiful and not cheesy at all…their stares, their touches, their soft kiss…I liked the vignette effect, them not caring about what is going on around them, it was just perfect – oh and I did not mind the setting either.
Cat: “Would you stop your heart for me”?
Vincent: “Every time I see you”
Now what I want to see going forward is more intensity, higher stakes and danger where we as viewers do not think vincat are invincible (and neither do they) , more drama, a bit less comedy, deeper dialogues, less repetitive writing –basically opportunities to create magical Vincat moments that we all love. And I am not saying we need these all the time, but I feel more often than we are currently getting them. Really looking forward to 306 – and from what I have seen from Gillian Hovarth’s tweets she appears to be a romantic soul and I really think she will deliver. Crossing fingers!
