haha, nice that you got your man to watch it!!! see it is even relatable to men!! Yeah, he didn't hate, but also didn't love the first few shows. But on the last episode he said that Jay & Kristin were great actors, and he agreed to at least tune his TV to BATB at 9pm on Thursdays. haha. Though he said he was going to probably keep it on mute because he preferred watching it with me. I'm fine with that, as long as BATB technically has one more household tuning in. ;D I've tried getting two other guy friends into the show, but so far no luck. They won't watch because they said it looks girly. I am throwing every comic/guy references I can at them to convince them it appeals to both. I have convinced my best friend from law school to tune in; she said she'd catch up on the show over the break. Waiting to hear what she thinks. And then I convinced my bandmate to come over around Christmas for a BATB marathon. She hadn't even heard of the show, but she said she'd watch all the episodes with me.

a question about the ratings (since it always comes up): do they really count every single household in the US? because I know here (in Germany) they don't do that. they have a certain "sample group" of like 5.000 households they check and only these determine the TV ratings. if it is the same/ similar in the US, then getting more people to watch is not the solution to get better ratings... :/

I usually watch it online the next day either on Hulu or the CW site. I live in the US but I don't have cable so I can't get the CW.... my convertor boxes suck and I only get like 2 channels a box grrrr.

Since I'm in Germany I tend to watch it on Friday's before or after work. On my computer, but on my TV-flat-Screen with my Dolby Surround System. Watched it right from the start!

a question about the ratings (since it always comes up): do they really count every single household in the US? because I know here (in Germany) they don't do that. they have a certain "sample group" of like 5.000 households they check and only these determine the TV ratings. if it is the same/ similar in the US, then getting more people to watch is not the solution to get better ratings... :/ Nielson is the main source for ratings in the US. That is true. And, unfortunately, watching online is basically ignored completely. (There is some data collected, but it's limited, especially because Nielson hasn't fully comprehended how to compile it in a way that advertisers could respond to.) Advertisers look to Nielson to determine whether or not they want to "sponsor" a show by having their commercials show during breaks for that show or having their products featured in that show. This really stinks because Nielson is outdated and highly inaccurate. Nielson families also have been known to lie. You have a remote and click who is watching. Nielson has no way of telling if that person is with you actually watching... also, people have been known to "check-in" their dog as a guest that's watching. Meaning, their dog registers as a person. Nielson also monitors DVR usuage for some of their homes. The next day DVR numbers, 7 day, and 10 day. These are (eventually) all calculated in. Early ratings numbers on websites usually only include the East Coast numbers. A show gets adjusted up or down based on other US time zones being added in. Next day DVR numbers count somewhat to advertisers. 7 and 10 day pretty much mean zilch. And let's face it, advertisers aren't stupid. They know people DVR so they can fast forward through their commercials. Just about every cable or satellite company in the US, as well as TiVo, collects data on your viewing and DVR habits. They do put all that data together and sell it to advertisers, but where Nielson claims to represent all of the US, your cable and satellite don't. They just say what their customers are watching. These numbers supplement the Nielson numbers for advertisers. They are in addition to Nielson; they don't replace. Again, some websites collect data on what people are watching. However, technology is moving faster than TV ratings data, so watching online doesn't mean much. However, it should be noted that the CW does look at internet numbers from cwtv.com, Hulu, etc. How much weight they give it, I don't know. One thing CW does give a lot of weight to is how well their shows are doing overseas. Nikita is the lowest rated program on their network and is pretty much guaranteed a 4th season. (It's in season 3) Because #1, it does so well overseas; and #2, syndication deal is possible after a 4th season. In fact, the only reason it got a season 3 is because production cost was cut down and because it does so well overseas. It is still important that people view and get their friends to view BATB though! Why? #1. During "sweeps" Nielson sends out written journals to tons of households in order to get "more accurate" numbers (again, it's still inaccurate). These journals allow people to fill out the form and mail it in and basically to show what shows they are watching for every 30 minute block. Your friend could get one. And you probably wouldn't know because Nielson tells their "families" not to tell other people if they were chosen to be live monitored or fill out a journal. (Not that everyone listens, but some people take that stuff seriously.) #2. Word of mouth. The more people watching and talking about this show at work or elsewhere, the better. Remember, they may tell someone who is a Nielson household and convince them to tune in. #3. More people watching = more people talking about the show on the internet & social media, participating in "Save My Show" campaigns, signing petitions, sending in fan mail, etc. etc. Chuck was given another season because they rebelled against Nielson ratings, and to show they had more fans, they went to Subway on a certain day and bought subs. Subway, who was a sponsor of the show, ended up paying some of the production costs for another season. With all this in mind, I'm going to continue to convince more people to watch this show and to continue to spread the word about how great this show is. It can't hurt; it can only help. (BTW, I apologize for this really lengthy post! Kudos to those who read all of it.) P.S. I saw in another thread on this forum that Nielson is now going to team up with Twitter to get info on what people are watching. It will be interesting to see how this affects ratings. Now I'm going to actually have to use my Twitter account. haha.

Well I believe that CW's tracking the watchers on their homepage as well, however the online streaming on other sources naturally is ignored. Like all the others as well CW gets money for advertising. Ads are the budget source for a show. The more popular a show the higher the rate on a spot during that show. Of course CW is only counting the viewers that earn them money. So to make sure that a show isn't canceled it to make sure that CW gets the budget it sets.
